Tyre replacement time. Pirelli Scor Verde 255/50 v 255/55?

Time to change the tyres and noticed that I could get 255/55/20 instead of the factory 255/50/20. Both JLR all season and ratings. Thought it might be a tad more comfortable and they are also cheaper. Am I missing something?

I run 255 55 20s on both of mine and find them a lot better over bumps and just add the extra padding that is missing on the 50s

Also the dash readout is spot on with them fitted whereas before it was around 2 to 3 mph slower in reality than the dash was reading when going through speed display signs
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

Would going to 255 55 20 over 255 50 20 standard need to be declared as a modification to the insurance company or would they not be bothered until you have an accident and the investigators say incorrect tyres fitted contributed to the accident and not pay out?

Just I have considered 55s too as a bit more choice for less.

Make sure you inform your insurance of this modification to your vehicle. Your discos factory spec diameter on the wheel should be 30 inches no more no less.

Going to 55 profile will change that to 31 inches diameter. Which will add more meat on the tyre yes, but it will also raise it's normal road running height by 1 inch too. I doubt it will affect your premium but if, heaven forbid, you had an accident, any excuse not to pay out will be used. And incorrect sized wheel on the vehicle will be classed as a non declared modification and basis to refuse to pay.

If you're in for the market of new tyres and you dont live somewhere that's likely to get snow, the Cooper Zeon 4XS - Sports that I fitted to my D4 are standard size on 20" rim but absorb the bumps very well. And they're just as quiet as the pirellis and better fuel economy too, all for less money. Wink

I had them in bigger size and found to be better ride quality, also puts your rims just above average kerb (3inches)

Downside remember you sit a bit higher, those 1.85m high barriers can no longer be crept under.
