It will be a hub bearing. Ours rumbled for about 2 years before developing serious detectable play. The dealer checked it at least twice, it passed MOTs, and the GG AT2s were blamed. Eventually I got the feeling that there was a bit more vagueness in the steering and jacked it up to check the bearing the old fashioned way. The bearing was shotb Embarassed

Have GG AT2s on mine - have loud rumbling, but definitely the wheel bearing. The opposite bearing was changed at the MOT, but no play felt in the other. Still doesn't feel like play in bearing, but noise and vibration unmistakeable, especially when turning right. Quiet at 50mph if straight or turning left - but rumbling appears at 70 even if straight on.

My wheel bearing was changed but sadly no reduction in the buzzing/vibrating type noise. Booked in to the indy again after Christmas for further investigation....

I had my wheel bearing changed a couple of weeks ago and problem solved. Running the Duratracs again now and no noise problem.

update

Had nearside front bearing changed yesterday - big difference - no noise when turning right (above 50mph) and the whole trip down south (116 miles) to inverness was beautifully quiet

Update:

Got new tyres fitted (Pirelli ATR's) but the fitter ran out of time to get the alignment completed. He tried but every time the computer said the car was aligned, the steering was off to the right and the car had a strong pull to the left. Drove it for 2 days over the weekend and the same droning/buzzing noise was there - so it wasn't the old Grabbers causing it. Left it back in for alignment and the tyre man had a look and found that the track rods were not screwed in evenly, 7 threads showing on one side, 3 showing on the other. He felt this was the reason for the steering being off so set to work fixing it. I wasn't with him at this point so I am only going by what he told me. Anyway, he left the car back to me and said it was as near perfect as he could get it. Sure enough, driving home the wheel was straight and no pull. Even better, the noise was gone. After 2 weeks driving on all sorts of surfaces and speeds, the car was beautifully silent. Then....it seems to be coming back. Not yet as bad as it was, but around 50mph, there is the occasional buzz from behind the dash. So this is seeming to suggest that something in the steering is causing this noise and it was temporarily fixed.

Just changed my winter tyres for summers

gone from veredstein wintrack to Grabbers,

car now drones like a bitch in between 50 and 70.

no noise on winters, but it sounds like a wheel bearing.

any ideas sounds clear cut tyres but gut says bearings.

I get a droning noise at similar speeds (have always had Grabbers). Strangely it often is quiet when I first set off, but comes on after about 10 minutes - I suspect it's to do with the titres warming up.
I have tried changing the tyres pressures - currently running 38psi all round - but no real difference.

So I think it's tyres, mainly because I've had both front bearing done relatively recently and the howl from them was much worse.

My D3 had new wheel bearings fitted just over a year ago under the dealer's guarantee. Since then I've noticed an almost discernable hum. Best way to describe it is that it's like a very mild sound of wind through telephone wires. A sort of gentle moan. It's not very loud but is just noticeable. Could it be cheapo wheel bearings which although new may not be perfectly manufactured? There does appear to be quite a large difference in price between the manufacturers. If not these, then could it be dif bearings or propshaft bearings.

Any ideas anyone?

To update my experiences, I called the fella who did the alignment and mentioned the problems I have had and the fact that initially after their work, the noise was gone but now it seems to be back occasionally. I still feel its coming from the internal steering system in someway so I asked about what all they had done. He did say they had unbolted the UJ in the column and rebolted it up again so I'm wondering if it is something to do that with working loose or vibrating? Must try and get some time to have a poke round the column and see if there is anything that could cause it.

Just another thought to add to this thread...
I had what I thought was a certain wheel bearing noise coming from the front near side. After much further investigation and more miles for the sound to get louder - in order to help identify it, turns out the front wheel bearing on the off side was the issue. No play in either front wheel.

I have an identical issue. I thought it was my Grabbers so borrowed a set of wheels and Pireli ATR Tyres from LT. it seemed quieter so assumed it was the tyres and ordered some Duratracs.

I had something similar recently - it was the front wheel bearings. Got one replaced and everything fine for a week, but the other one then started. I think the noise from the first one masked the noise from the second.

Have to say that I slightly miss the noise - it sounded a bit like what I imagine a Spitfire would have sounded like. Or a Hurricane.

Thread resurrection time

ive got a droning noise now coming from the front end. seems to be gradually getter louder as time progresses. I commute 70 miles a day on a mix of B roads and A1/M18.

currently got Landsail and Scorpion Zero tyres on opposing corners that were on when I bought the car 8 months/9k miles ago (so mixed brands on each axle which im aware is a no-no).

Ive so far put the droning noise down to the tyres, which I was going to look at changing in another couple of months as there is still plenty of tread left on all 4 (approx. 5-6mm each) but I also have the concern that's its the wheel bearings.

how much is it to change the bearings on each corner (2011 MY12 SDV6 107K miles so probably never been changed)
