I accidentally put unleaded in my TDV6 without thinking
Fortunately I realised and didn't start the engine. My question is do I need to have the fuel tank removed to drain, or is there a less invasive and expensive solution.
I was thinking of either:
- syphoning out the unleaded and then filling the tank with diesel to 'rinse' it, and syphoning it out again. Hopefully this will be sufficient to get rid of the ULP.
or
- filling the tank with diesel and overflowing it until all the ULP comes out (assuming that ULP floats on diesel)

Re: Unleaded in TDV6
How much unleaded ?
My missus put 3 litres in once when we had the TD5 and all I did was to fill it to the brim with diesel - no more was done and car ran OK - please don't follow this example until an 'expert' has given your the actual solution.D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

I did the same with a TD5, 4 ltrs before I realised, just filled up with diesel, no problem. If you syphon out, I've no idea how much would be left or how the TDV6 lump would take it with a full tank of diesel, sorry.
PS is there a drain plug at the bottom of the tank, might get most out if there is. I'd look at mine but I won't see my D3 for 3 weeks, hopefully you'll be sorted out by then.

I would imagine a drain out would be fine. There must still be diesel in the fuel line, so an empty and flush of the tank should be ok. Dealers will go a step further and change the filters etc - and charge you a fortune for it

D3syd,
out of interest what company petrol station was it (BP, Caltex,?)?
I am a bit suspicious of the ones that have diesel and ULP from the same bowser rather than those that have a seperate bowser located away from the petrol ones.regards

pbhawkin, it was a BP servo, and the diesel bowser was separate. It was me who had the temporary brain lapse
The mechanic syphoned the ULP out this morning and rinsed the tank with diesel, then topped it up with more diesel and took it for a test drive. He said it was running ok, so hopefully I got away with it
There will no doubt be a bit of residual ULP in the tank but this should be ok I guess. I will keep topping up the tank with more diesel to further dilute the ULP.'06 TDV6 SE AUTO BUCKINGHAM BLUE

d3syd - I wouldn't worry about it. If it was the other way round (ie. diesel in petrol tank) than I would. When I had my Prado, I filled the main tank with petrol (approx 80litres) and when I realised my mistake, I filled the reserve with diesel. Imagine the garage operator's surprise when I went to pay for the petrol & diesel. I just switched to reserve tank and drove out the station. What did I do with the contaminated petrol? Over a period of 1.5 years, I diluted the diesel with it (about 1litre per tank full) and "burned" it off. The Prado diesel idled a bit rough, that's all.'06 Disco 3 TDV6 SE Buckingham Blue

A fuel attendant filled my TDV6 with unleaded without me finding out. I then drove about 2km's before the engine management system shut it off. The end result was six new injectors and a new high pressure diesel pump. R40000 damage. Diesel has lubricating qualities that petrol doesn't have. These days I'm much more carefull when filling up.
