Upgrade to D3 or keep 300tdi

Hi,
Have not posted here before , I do not own a D3 but have been pondering if it is a secure bet to own one. At present I have a 3000tdi 1996 model, rebuilt the interior shell ie inner wings boot sills etc really fancy an upgrade. Not new to LR started in 1964 with a series 1 and owned 6 different models since then, this one for 14 years.
Question and advise - to old to do my own maintenance (79) would I be wise to sell on the 300tdi and go for a D3 within a minimum spend. Iwould not consider a D4 to give gov all that extra in tax. Have been told of problems but those similar problems hav existed as long as LR has made cars, personally have only fought corrosion. Rolling Eyes

Tax is not as simple as you think,
Pre 06 295
Post 06 D3 570 up to about D4 2012?
I think D4 stop/start dropped tax to low/mid 300 and Adblue D4 even cheaper.

I would personally stick wth the 300, known quantity etc etc.

If the 300tdi is good, keep it. A D3 can be lot of work, and not as easy as a D1.

if you could find a D3 that you know for a fact has had most of the known fault rectified and has enough miles on to put it past the crank failure era then I say go for it , its a whole world better than the D2 but having said that I di agree with the others , having a reliable old vehicle is much better than the worry ( knowing the D3 ) of a newer one

keep the 300 and just use cooking oil to run it, at 80p a litre what's not to like and the smell from the exhaust...fantastic

I found with the 300, once above 50/50 ratiof of veg oil to derv, it lost power, might have helped if I heated it? but after a few months of messing around the price of veg oil started to get silly, so I gave it up as a bad job.
The webasto certainly smelt interesting Thumbs Up

A D3 can be very expensive to run, theres the tax (unless early one or commercial (though these come at a premium)) and general upkeep. Parts are still very expensive thanks to the D4 and they are quite difficult to work on.

If you fancy a change, I'd sooner recommend to someone like yourself a really nice D2 TD5. There are still plenty of rust free or at least low rust D2s with low mileage kicking around. Expect prices anywhere between £3k and £7k. Parts are at least half the price vs a D3 and much easier to work on. Tax is cheap as they are old enough to be locked down, insurance is cheaper etc etc.

Some pics of our two Discos side by side for inspiration.

I’ve got both. An off-road D1 and an on road D3 (which has been off road). The D1 is like the 4th road bridge. Constantly welding it up, plus last outing snapped a half shaft and the alternator packed in. D3 is like a Duracell battery, it just keeps going and going and going etc. If you’re not looking at getting dirty with the spanners, a D3 can be costly. Keep the reliability of the D1.

Is there a Land Rover Specialist near you who charges reasonable hourly rates and reasonable rates for parts (relative to a Land Rover Main Dealer), who you can trust?
