Sorted for now. There is a tilt plate that pushes on the switch. The two pivots have broken but as I now know how things work I can manipulate the plate through the rubber to open the door or remove the rubber to directly push the switch. Ideally a new plate is needed.
There was also quite a bit of gray crud in there which was set like concrete. Maybe that's why the pivots are broken.

Have followed the above steps as well and cleaned out the inner handle. Some grot but not enough to block the handle permanently. In order to refit the rubber cover, I took out the handle insert by lodging a flat screw driver on the right hand short side of the handle insert. That way you can slowly lift out the handle insert (grey), refit the rubber cover, and the push the fully asembled handle insert with rubber cover back in place.D5 HSE TDV6 (gone but not forgotten)
