upper tailgate latch

HI Guys, upper tailgate switch isn't working. If I use the button on the keyfob it's fine.

Is it as simple as pulling the rubber unit out and (hopefully) cleaning the connections? I have tried to pull the rubber out of the housing but don't want to go mad in case it's fixed in somehow.
