You need extra kit to achieve that (eg a BAS FBHIC) so not something you can sort at the roadside. It may seem counterintuitive but use of the FBH can make it harder to start as it tricks-out the glowplug logic.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

the WD40/easy start stuff like anything is 100% safe but if its good enough for the likes of the AA and RAC to use you should be ok for a tiny use.
The best way is to take off an induction pipe AFTER the turbo, spray inside it for a second towards the inlet manifold and then try and start the car. You want to get it to run off a little bit of vapour and then continue firing itself. If your running a continuous amount into the inlet it will cause damage to the engine and just prove that fuel isn't being supplied for some reason FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

Had the same problem for about two weeks ago in the Alps. That week -20 degrees was the "normal" temperature at night, in the morning -15 degrees. What i did was adding a diesel additive which i bought with a local shop. The next morning when i glowed the plugs for about two times --> ignition on, glow, ignition off, ignition on, glow, ignition off, ignition on, glow, start. This worked really well the rest of the week.
But next year when i will go to the Alps i will have the BAS FBH remote installed.
Regards and lots of luck.

its an old trick with diesels,if you think that's archaic,a neighbour of mine in the 50s,60s,used to light a taper of newspaper, hold it by the air filter to start his old wagon.you are just heating up the air, whether it be with glow plugs or any other means.

LR saw it necessary to fit a FBH to aid the car. I'd use that facility everytime.
