URGENT Cold start failure in Alps - fix please FBH preheat ?

Failure to start yesterday am -7 deg c
Turned over loads and loads but would not fire

Called out rac and local guy came - jump leads attached and small can of additive added
10 - 15 mins later started

Thought to be fuel waxing which I doubted

Tried today -4 deg c
5 mins turning over and just fired up

Anything I can do ??

Can I frig FBH to come on before I start up (does not seem to be running after start)

I'm bit desperate and don't want to be stranded ! The collective is called upon !

I'm not on web until tomorrow but discodunc woolmeister and Geoff have my mobile if any one has some bright ideas [/b]

If its waxing the best thing you can really do is get a fuel additive in there or take the chance and put a TINY amount of petrol in.

Im talking about .25-.5 litres for a full tank here and in a few minutes the fuel system would have mixed it sufficiently to be perfect.

Other than that maybe ask for a local garage to store it in over night...

Some manufactures including VW recommend this even at a higher rate of 5% on older engines Thumbs Up Do it at your own risk.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Being of HDi vintage I think a max of 2% is as much as I could reccomend but the above should be enough to prevent waxing of the non bikini kind!

Give it a squirt of easy start (or equivalent) into air intake whilst turning it over if it starts most likely glow plugs no good.

Not always possible but if you an get to do it,it helps loads.

Get a hair dryer on hottest setting and blow in the air intake for a good 5-10mins, then try to start.

That hairdrier option would take a fair while and long extension lead from a chalet to a car space Very Happy

Dont even need easy start perse, deoderant or WD40 can do the same trick.

May be next time I will manage it Thumbs Up

It is good to know about the fault code as mine plays up sometimes when it is cold, it is going into the dealer again soon so will get them to look into it Thumbs Up

old lada nivas. when supplied to military they came with an aspestos blanket

instruction
make a fire
put blanket on fire

put blanket around engine

wait......
start engine

obviously.a liitle bit of PPE would have to be carried with you nowadays Rolling Eyes

but a proven technique use by my father was an old Davies lamp under the engine just enough to take the chill off overnight.
over here. I have seen lorries with 5L paint tins with charcoal in under the engines.

obviously dont try any of these as you may suffer from a little bit death.

parking next to a wall can help in cold weather and lower the car overnight.

hopefully by the time you have read this the day will have warmed up enough to start...

Thumbs Up
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

I wasn't telling you off fella Smile

The lamps ideas are good if you have direct access to the sump but in alpine weather taking the sump guards off could be fun Smile

Timed/Park climate all the way! don't know how I'd cope without it now Smile
