Useless Sat Nav.
I have recently purchased a Discovery 3 XS with fitted Sat Nav. The vehicle did not possess a handbook for the navigation system and the dealer is obtaining one for me. However, I am sure I am operating it correctly, but find that the only way to process a direct route is to plot several via points en route to your destination. A classic example is on a journey from Tywyn (Mid Wales) to Cardiff which would normally be along the A470, the Sat Nav insists on routing me through Birmingham, down the M5 and accross the Severn Bridge. This of course doubles both the mileage and journey time.
Does anybody else have similar problems with their Sat Nav. My remedy is to use my £130 Tom Tom, which is of course perfect !!

have you got the settings correct - if you have it set to quickest route then its probably correct - it will give you 3 options - you can choose which route you want Duncan

The LR Sat Nav is indeed a wonderful beast!. It has its 'special moments'.
BUT that does seem a little extreme!............... there's a setting in it for 'best route' or 'route options'. Probably set for Motorway only route......

I don't think the satnav is useless as I use it always and it gets me were I want to go. I have to admit that sometimes I drive a different route because I want to or I expect less traffic but it works and she has a nice Dutch voice.
You could be right that Tomtom is way better, but that is because Tomtom is Dutch. Roel

You need to disable the 'Sheep Protection' mode in the settings (a 'special' setting for the Welsh market only!)Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

When I was driving in France, it tried taking me hundreds of miles out of my way to get to where I wanted to go.
TBH, if I'm going long distance where I don't knwo which motorways etc to take, then I'll have a look at a road atlas first & put in the waypoints.
If it's somewhere I know how to get to the general area, then I still plug in the destination, but drive my own route until I'm near to where I want to be & then start listening to the satnav.
So yes, it's useless at times, but great at others.
Also consider getting the latest disk, it always said it woiuld take me about 45 minutes to drive home from work, when it really only takes me 17minutes.
That was becaus for some strange reason it didn't use the local roads to cross the river & tried taking me way aroiund to come into the village from the other side.
Latest satnave now is much better and times it at 21 minutes Bodsys Brake Bible
Hi. I have similar problems. On long runs which include motorways it always tries to take me off. For instance I was going from Glos on the M5 to Padstow, it tried to take me off at every junction. I stopped, made sure it was set for Motorways (which it was) and then just turned down the sound until I got on the A roads and it was OK.
It even tries it when I am on the A417 trying to get home and tries to take me across country which is A0 Slower and B) Longer.
As I have a 2006 model I am assuming ( and hoping) that the new upgrade in the post will help. Otherwise I will revert back to my £350 Garmin, which also has Speed Cameras.
There are some nice features over the Garmin but these are outweighed by the issues.
I have a 2009 disc in mine and it's no better than the 2005 disc that was in it when I first bought the car.
If we're sat at Portsmouth ferry port waiting to board the ferry to St Malo (which we've done for the last 6 years), and I program in our destination in the Vendee, the satnav will always insist that we drive to Calais and get the ferry from there, despite the fact that it knows there are ferries from Portsmouth. It'll do the same on the return journey too .
Stick with the TomTom is what I say Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

Basically, the SatNav is in three main ways:
- usability of the interface
- the route it takes you
- the estimating part of ETA
Apart from that, I like it Andrew

I had this exact same problem when I had a year-old Freelander 2 HSE (2007 56 plate), but it stopped doing this and I don't know why.
Occasionally it would still try to take me by a more scenic route, but I'd get to my destination eventually.
