Hi PCH, I’m referring to the life span of the vehicle ( any diesel vehicle ) Diesels will require more servicing than petrol engines, particularly here in Australia because of the crap fuel.

Well actually, our diesel fuel is at the same standard as a most of the european countries (Sulphur content 50ppm, mandated by Aus Govt from 1 January 2006).
My father had a 1982 2.3l Diesel Holden Jackaroo (Isuzu/Vauxhall/Opel Trooper/Monterey, to you International folk) from new, which he sold in 2003 with 490,000kms on it. Although he perfomed regular oil changes, he never had the injectors serviced. This car is still running today.
This proves the longevity of diesel engines.

In fact Caltex have been given an exemption from the low sulphur requirement.  So our fuel may still be crap.  you may or may not get the lower sulphur fuel. Having said that, the independent servo I get mine from is Caltex supplied and I have not had any problems.
Malfunction, just test drive all the vehicles you are interested in and concider the best value for money all D3s are good  but they do differ in feel and response. I refuse to use caltex for this very reason, even though I have a fuel card with them.
Jerks! Why should they get an exemption, because they are lazy!
BP/Mobil/Shell can do it! Why can't the 'Battling Aussie' (not that thats true, considering they're associated with Chevron).

Caltex has new plants online in Brisbane and Kurnell which have already been producing ULSD for months. Where did you see the exemption?
As a data point, a friend with a Mitsuxxxxx xxxero has changed fuel cards from XX to Caltex, and noticed a slight improvement in fuel economy. He logs every tank in a spreadsheet and he did 37,000km on XX... so run-in was not a factor.

Hi Glymmer_Man, Exactly my usage too.
I only use Shell and BP as they guaranty their fuel’s quality.
Genuine Mobile servos are the same but I would take care when using franchise Mobile servos.
I’ve already had one problem where I filled up at a Mobile Quix servo.
I had at least 5 lts left in the tank and, according to their bowser, my tank took another 104 lts. Not bad for a 100 lt tank.
I raised with them and they said they would get back to me, well you know the rest.
BTW, 2011 is when the Federal government has mandated that we must have world parity quality diesel fuel, so until then we still have crap fuel, only not quite as crap as it was.
Also, I agree that diesel engines are good for many years of reliable service, but to keep this reliability requires continuous and regular oil and oil filter changes, far more than is needed with a petrol engine and even though diesel engines have jumped ahead technologically and in performance in just the last ten years, but when used extensively as a town vehicle, it is still a smart move to do more frequent oil and filter changes than is necessary with a petrol engine.

It was listed on the Caltex website, I agree with Caver here. It does however, appear to have been lifted.
It appears they didn't begin producing ULSD until 28.06.2006 at their Lytton refinery, according to this release

Caltex really did claim an exemption last year. It was on their website!
BP was the first to introduce 50ppm in QLD in early 2005, I believe.
