V8 D3

Chaps,

Unfortunately a small accident has rendered my D2 V8 a write off. It’s a 57k and otherwise great condition that was going to be a keeper as I was about to send offf for a 4.6 conversion, interior is immaculate. Needs some work to headlining and sunroof drains plus an overhaul of the suspension (I suspect upper and lower arms plus a new ace pump) but aside from that makes a lovely noise and I see D2 prices going up for good low milers like this - I also like the classic looks.

But.... (you knew this was coming!) as many of you know I’m a long term D3/D4 fan and there’s a 100k D3 V8 in Tonga green that keeps catching my eye, it’s 9k which seems a bit OTT for 100k.

What does the Disco3/4 collective think I should do? Keep and repair my D2 and get her just tickety boo (new rear quarter and rear door, only mild cosmetic) or take the £2800 the insurance co have offered and get the D3 with more miles? (Or indeed wait for another v8)

What do you think?....

mmmm, I've gone from a TD5 to a D3 V8 and if it was straight forward as that I'd say take the money and run!

The D3 V8 is a beautiful off-roader to drive, even with the m/t's on mine, totally different to the somewhat agricultural drive of the D2

But, a low mileage D2 V8, now that's a slightly different proposition, especially if you were going for the 4.6 conversion but I think I'd go for the change and hope that you don't regret it

I suppose the challenge is it's not really a change so much - I've had FFRR, D3 and D4 (one of last before the D5)

I think the D3 is a classic in the making and I have to admit I have a soft spot for them after the adventures we've had in the D3/D4 in the past.... it's honestly quite a difficult decision, part of me wants to throw a few grand at the D2 V8 and make it a really top notch motor - the design is ageing well and low mile V8s are going up and up now (some are up at 5-6k now) - this one really is spotless inside, literally brand new (ex diplomatic car so not seen off road and chassis is better than my 09 D3 when I sold it!)

That said if a V8 D3 is already more powerful than a 4.6 D2 then might be worth going to that rather than throwing £2k at the D2s engine. But then, the D3 is more complex so will cost more to keep in the road....

Argh.... do you see what I mean... Rolling with laughter

Sorry to hear that. Sad

Disclaimer: I’m a big D3 V8 fan. Its my second Discovery (the first was a D4 TDV6) and I really liked them both. The V8 accelerates very nicely if you want it to, yet normally it cruises and burbles along among traffic effortlessly. So far, the V8 engine is fairly trouble free and the one I have has 205000 km/127000 miles on it. Judging on aulro, disco3 and the American Land Rover forums (.com) I expect it to continue so, too.

The price of a roughly equivalent to the one you mentioned - one of the 39 registered D3 V8s in the country - D3 V8 HSE with 170000 km/~100000 miles here is ~18000 eur. With that in mind I certainly wouldn’t have a problem paying 9000 GBP (~ 10500 eur) for one in good shape. Since cars cost less as new and thus are valued less as used in UK this is where YMMV might apply.

I’ve never had a D2 but I would imagine the D3 to be more comfortable to drive around in. OTOH people like to drive around in Defenders, too, so... Whistle

Hope this was of some assistance Thumbs Up

I went from a DII 4.6 V8 to a D3 V8, also due to circumstances beyond my control, did I want to no? But it didn't rely make sense to buy a 4.0 DII and start again.

If if I was offered the option of a perfect DII 4.6 V8 now, would I go back? Not on your nelly, it may cost more in maintenance but the D3 is better in every other way, power, economy, handling, comfort, space, oh and did I say power Laughing

Would you go from 56k D2 to 100k D3?

Depends how well the D3 has been looked after, mine at the milage had had all the major replacements done, so apart from a suspension compressor recently has only had 'normal' maintenance in the last three years.

On the D3 V8:

- have spark plugs been changed? Not sure what the official interval is but probably somewhere around 90 k I assume?
- might be sensible to change the PCV ventile (cheap, easy)
- auxiliary belts (90 k miles, same as plugs, I think?)
- thermostat housing can leak, thermostat itself can jam (open I believe), lines can leak but I don’t think there is an interval to change, it’s more replace on failure I believe. Coolant change at 10 year mark.

Then the normal which applies to all D3:

- has front diff breather cap been changed?
- front/rear diff fluid?
- ATF? (Every 10 years so certainly due for a flush if nothing else)
- brake lines (every 6) and fluid (every 2)?
- coolant?
- etc.

Mine had a EAS compressor changed around 100k miles according to records.

Yes, all other things being equal. Mileage of 100k is nothing for that engine,if it has been properly maintained. By equal I mean, running gear, interior, chassis etc.

Edited to say: Never had a D2- went from a FL2 3.2 straight 6

Indeed, you’re right.

And interval for auxiliary drive belts is actually 150k on petrol, not 105k as I wrote (would be diesel).. or the corresponding amount of years - 105k would be 7 and 150k 10.

V8 petrols all day long.
I had 4 grand cherokees in my time:
4.0 Laredo
4.0 limited
4.7 overland
4.7 limited
Love the big engines.
Wish there were more D3 V8’s out there as I would definitely go for one
