V8 Thermometer sitting low

Happy Christmas all

Been out helping in response to floods and now temperature gauge is looking poorly.

Any thoughts chaps? Could it be the thermometer like in diesels? Heating working ok. Coolant level is OK

Some of the Facebook groups suggest this may be normal for the outside temperature.

Mine just sits a smige below halfway mark and doesnt move. Once, when I first had it, it took a while to warm up. Like 15miles or so which I thought was unusual.

I have, as a precaution, changed all the sensors linked with the temparture gauge. One at the top, and I cant recall if its one or two down by the oil filter.

I did this because I left it ticking over for a while, whilst doing something on the IDD and the fan kicked in and wouldnt swtich off, plus I noticed that the temparture gauge was not showing any readings, which was odd. I switched it on and off and the temparture gauge was back to where it was originally.

Given that, that needle has pretty much naff all to do with the operating temperature of the engine unless the ECU wants it too I wouldn't be too trusting of it until you get something that reads live data on there.

Mine has never read correctly since I've had it but my scan guage shows a good representation of the temps with oil water and transmission temps based on what the ECU is reading from the sensors not what it thinks I want to see.

Temp gauge on TDV6 works from two sensors, water and oil, it’s quite common for the oil sensor to fail, try disconnecting it and see if there is any difference. The gauge tends to work in 4 steps, cold, warm, normal and hot rather than a step less motion.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

My V8 comes up to temp even in cold weather very quickly, when I first got the car I had a similar issue to you from time to time (and a fault code relating to the car being slow to come up to temp), thermostat is easy and cheap to change (the rubber seal had failed on mine) and solved it. Most motor factors keep them on the shelf so must fit a number of other engines!

Bleeding the coolant afterwards can be tricky. Open the small bleed valve on the pipe at the top of the engine (if yours has one, not all do) while you refill the coolant but CLOSE it before starting the engine otherwise I found it just drew air in which was somewhat counterproductive.

Bungle, did you do just the thermostat, or did you just swap the whole housing?
