Oil drain plug seal. New one?
Hello,
I will do an oil change this weekend, my first time on a Disco 3, 2.7L, V6, 2005.
Changed the oil in numerous other Landies but never on my Disco 3.
Hence a couple of questions.
I noticed that the manual states to change the oil drain plug seal. Is this absolutely necessary or will the old one suffice? I live in Central Europe and a pain to get hold of a new one.
Also, regarding the torque tensions on the top oil filter bolt, again as stated in the Hayne's manual, does it have to be exact or just by approximate feel? Tight but not over tight. Never torqued an oil filter housing bolt before, ever! Can't find my torque wrench anyway!??***
Any advice much appreciated.

I have changed my sump plug seal once, but generally not. Make sure the seal is clean, and the seal face of the sump is clean. Should be fine. Richard

As above for the sump plug just make sure it is still intact, the filter upper housing is plastic and comes off as whole unit do not over tighten or you may crack the lower housing also start it several turns by hand so you know it’s not cross threaded.
You have to then pull out the filter from the upper housing, do NOT re-assemble in the same way, locate the new filters spigot into the lower housing port that takes the spigot then refit and screw down the upper housing. Don’t forget to also replace the housing seal that comes with the new filter.

The rubber seal is built into the sump plug, its the same as many other ford ones and only costs 2 or 3 quid.
I have reused mine a few times now when Ive forgotten to get a new one for the oil change, hasnt leaked yet

When I didn't bother changing mine, some of the oil leaked out when hot.
It wasn't the end of the world.
I think I purchased 10 plugs off ebay for about £1 each as they fit jags and fords etc so will be useful.

Always used genuine filter from dealer and so always picked up new sump plug at the same time. Strangely, i keep the old plug and use it on the old ford focus so it also has a reasonably new one. Never had a problem with it being used twice.
Make a note of sputnixb51 advice ref refitting the new filter, it is very important.
