Winter wheels; spare wheel / directional tyre dilemma

I'm fitting Nokian winter tyres and have a 5th spare that I was also going to fit one to.

But I've remembered that they are directional and much of their performance is in the tread pattern. But if a wrong side tyre goes; and it get some put on; basically running backwards then that's no good.

What do people do if they want a matching 5th tyre but it's directional!?

There is a 50/50 chance it will be OK and run the correct way if you have to need it, if not, it will get you to a tyre depot to have the original repaired or the tyre swapped round. Alternatively one could get a none directional tyre as a spare, but that would still leave you in the position of having a none matching axle set should you need to use it.

Read somewhere that you are more likely to get a puncture at the ditch side rather than the drivers side. But I guess if you do have to put it on wrong just get the puncture fixed ASAP

as one of the other posters has said, its more likely to get a puncture on the kerb side as this is where you tend to pick up crap, so fit the spare tyre as though you were going to put it on the passenger side. If you had to fit it drivers side it wont hurt for a short time while you get the puncture fixed and then you can refit that rim.

The directionality's only relevant in the wet too so that's another variable!

Directional will heat up considerably if driven hard the wrong way around. My local tyre place says they have great demand for worn directional tyres, fellas put them on the wrong way around on rear wheel drive cars. They heat up fast and they make the best doughnuts.
