Vibration at 70mph

When driving I occasionally on the motorway at 70mph, the car starts to shake, as though it is resonating. It just gets worse and worse until you slow back down to 50. You can then sped back up again and it goes away. I thought it might be old tyres, but I’ve only recently changed those. Any ideas? Worn wheel bearing?

I think you'll find one of your rear calipers is sticking on, I get this occasionally if my lad decides to play with the hand brake when we're parked up.

I found slowing and pressing the brake pedal a few times hard helps to release it.. Obviously a new caliper will help too..

next time it does it, pull over asap and feel the wheel for heat, that'll show you which side, or look at the lower brake linings

Thanks. Time to get the wheels off and inspect the pads.

Is it the car in general or the steering wheel vibrating? ie. front or rear?

The whole car starts to shake quite markedly. It certainly is concerning To passengers on board, like a wheel has lost its balancing weights, but stronger. I am planning to replace the pads and will check the slider pins and rear shoes. Thanks for your advice.

As the guys have said above, check the rear calipers. I'd also be tempted to take a look at the centre bearing on the rear prop. The rubber on these tends to perish/tear over time.

Pad and brake fluid change

Had a productive day today.

Jacked up the car - most time consuming bit of the exercise, but will be quicker next time as I know what I’m doing. The 3t axle stands from machine mart are solid and reassuring. Once the car is in the air, the rest is easy peasy. So much room to work in.

Started at the back. The near side lower calliper slider pin was seized, so I replaced all rear calliper pins. If I did the job again I would have bought a new Calliper mount, these are inexpensive and have none of the corrosion.

The brake pads were easy to swap out. Once you’ve got the car up, you’ve got acres of room to work in. I’m used to spannering motorcycles which are fiddly, but you can stick your whole head in there. Feels like a luxury.

So swapped out the pads, then On to bleeding the brakes, which haven’t been done in a few years.

I bought the laser brake bleeder tool from Screwfix with 10% off it was £45 quid. This thing makes brake fluid changes an absolute dream. Turkey Baster to remove the old fluid from the reservoir, top up with new, pour the new fluid into the brake bleeding tool, attach the brake fluid cap and pump to 2Bar and then bleed your callipers one by one. I used the cheap Halfords brake bleeder tool which is basically a piece of tubing with a non return valve on the end (which I cut off) and a small pot to fill.

The operation was a complete success, although when I was test driving the car I remembered that I left the locking nut adapter on the wheel. Stopped in a lay-by to check, and was relieved to see it still there hanging on for dear life. Lucky escape and £50 saved.

Next time I’ll be much more confident swapping brake pads and even discs. Lots of room to work and front and rear callipers use the same tools and torque settings.

The car is now telling me it needs a service. I live just outside gloucester, any recommendations on a good LR / independent for a basic service (I’m mostly interested in the check side of thinhs) as barctge usuals oil and filter changes, everything else is up to date.

Well done!

I really need to get one of those pressurised brake bleeder gizmos. My ears always hurt after I've bled the brakes....from the wife moaning her legs are aching holding the brake pedal down for me.

If you are capable of doing the brakes, you are more than capable of servicing the thing, nowt to be afraid of, big and simple to work on Thumbs Up

I made a similar error only I didn’t remember. I saw the adapter in the junction at the top of my road and still didn’t realise until I stopped to pick it up.

Another chap in the next town over (reported in the local rag) got stuck in traffic at a junction and noticed some wheel nuts in the gutter. Recognising them as the same as his, he picked them up only to find they were his and someone had tried to steel his wheels days earlier as all his wheel nuts were loose.

I’m certain I could service it myself. Only thing that stops me is getting a stamp in the book - when you sell (will I ever?) and resetting the service light. I also think it’s good to have someone who knows what’s what give it a once over every year to check all is in good nick.

Oil and filter change looks to be an easy job, air and cabin filter likewise, but how do you reset the service light? Confused

Apart from using a tool there will be another way. BMW was something like shorting pin 7 & 11 on the diagnostics port for x seconds and Ford you selected various things on the dash and ignition. As the disco uses predominantly Ford and BMW electronics, I bet there’s an alternative.
