Vin number

Hi guys/gals,
I looked at a Disco 3 (56) today but on checking the windscreen found the vin number missing, there is a black plate under the bonnet with a vin on it that tallys with my autotrader check but I could not find another vin no, so where should I be checking for it and why would the windscreen one be missing?

Thanks

Shaun

I would be very suspicious if the windscreen vin is missing.
The black vin stickers are easily forged.
It should also be stamped in the chassis on the offside rail just at the front of the drivers door.
If in doubt walk away, there are plenty out there.

D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.

Could have had a windscreen replaced at some point and they've fitted the wrong screen, there are two, one with the vin along the bottom of the screen and the other on the side of the screen.
Was asked where my vin was when I had a screen replaced to ensure they brought the correct screen.

A parking slip has fallen between the the windscreen and the internal vin so I can't see mine and so far haven't managed to extract offending ticket.

Are you saying it failed because it wasn’t displaying a VIN? The only VIN that counts in on the right chassis beam adjacent to the driver door, and if that’s been removed/defaced then there’s a serious issue.

I’d just remove it then, that sticker is just a sticker, it has a VIN on it but I don’t see why it has to be your VIN. The only VIN that counts is the one on the Chassis. My car has ECUs with other VINs registered to them but it doesn’t fail an MOT.

The MOT rules state:
a. VIN missing or cannot be found - MAJOR
b. VIN incomplete, illegible or obviously falsified - MAJOR

So remove that sticker, clean the vin on the chassis, paint a big red rectangle around it if you have to and then show him where it is.

If he still won’t pass it, go else where or raise a complaint to DVLA.
