Wandering when I hit white lines
Hi,
Anyone suffered from this symptom at all?
2006 TDV6 Auto
135k
Replaced all upper and lower arms as the fronts were worn out. Used the Advance Factor Mayle parts.
Replaced all anti roll bar drop links, front and back.
Replaced panrods on rear.
Replaced anti roll bar bushes front.
Following 4 wheel alignment, and driving home, I found that it was not the best experience when hitting white lines on the B roads at roughly 30 to 50mph. The car is thrown side to side, like someone was turning the steering back and forth rapidly.
Motorway driving isnt too bad for erratically wandering, its mainly found when on B roads and lanes.
It's been back into the garage and there is play found on the lower bush on the rear OS hub , and I am having all four changed. Upper and lower on the rear hubs both sides.
I also have a set of new shocks to get fitted at the same time.
Cant think of anything else that should be considered. Theres little left to change after the above is carried out.
The steering rack is pretty quiet. Dont get any play out of it, although there is a rattle off the column when coming up the rough road to the house. Suspect that's a joint or bush in the column?
I cant see why riding a white line would give such a problem, it's the first problem I have had of this kind.
And after many years of running older Discos and Vogues, I'm used to bush and bearing issues, but the slight play found on the rear hub bush seems to be far too little to give me this symptom.
Thoughts appreciated.
Regards
J

But how much tread have you. If alignment was out, tyres would be worn in a particular way. Now you have had an alignment you are running on only a small contact patch.

Check the clamp bolts are tight on the lower steering column and the lower SC uj is free and not worn. Hold the steering wheel with finger and thumb and very lightly feel for any play. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks for the replies.
Tyres are in good shape. They were not on the Disco that long before I had all of this work done.
Shes on pirelli rubber , not cheap replacements either.
The steering column, i will re visit and ensure nothing has been missed there.
Thanks for the advice.

How confident are you that the alignment has been done properly?
I had similar work done on my D3 but I was suspicious that the alignment hadn't been done properly because the car wandered around whenever it was on even marginally uneven surface.
I eventually took it to another place the have the alignment done again - they have a state of the art machine and I put the EAS in tight tolerance mode beforehand. It turned out that the alignment was miles out. It drives perfectly now.2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

I'd be tempted to take a look at the inner steering/track rods and outer ends.
I believe Meyle produce a HD product variant for the D3 also Kev

Thanks for the feedback.
It's back into the workshop for the remaining bushes to be replaced now. Only the rear hub ones left.
The guys are pretty switched on and keep bringing up the fact that the tyres are rather unevenly worn, on the outer edges. And in their words, a bit like an egg.
These came off my Full Fat Rangie and were a few K on them at that point , then did another 4 or 5 k on the Disco before all the arms etc were changed .
Since they cant find anything else, and the tyres are getting now anyway, I might as well stick new rubber on.
They were Pirelli Verdes, and i have had a few sets on all of my RRs with great results. So will be sticking to these again.
Anyone else noticed loor handling with unevenly worn tyres. I wouldnt have thought it would affect such a heavy vehicle. However , I might be proved wrong.

When I was in the USA the LR dealer in Fort Worth would not do wheel alignment on my D3 with worn tyres because of the reasons already mentioned by your garage. Any misshape of the tyre will load the bushes and give a false alignment reading. You say the tyres are off a RR, are they the correct size for a Discovery ?

The paint they use on white lines is the most slippery substance known to man. Seen it used on skid pans.
