Any tv with a HDMI socket can be made into a smart TV with a Firestick for £35 and in a lot of cases work far better than most genuine smart TVs.  It can when others can't,

As above, we got a Sony smart tv about two years ago and played with the smart functions the first day and never again. Not much content and not user friendly. I've an Apple TV and that's how we get Netflix etc on the tv. Maybe the newest ones are better. Next tv we buy I'll spend a good while in the showroom testing the "smart" part but I think an additional dongle of your choice could be a better option.

New smart TVs are very good, anything over 1 year old can be pathetic, some do not even have main stream apps, but as you say will work very well with a device no bigger than your thumb providing they have a suitable input socket,
Grandson has a 12 year old plasma Panasonic and Voice Istick, it's nearly as good as my £2k+ Samsung. It can when others can't,
