[Wanted] Snow chains
We are going to Scotland for xmas and wonder if I need to take snow chains.
Does anyone know if it's possible to rent them or maybe lend a set to me.
My tyres are 265 70 17

Scotland is a big place! Depends where you are going and what you intend doing?
For most of the country I'd say no, just a decent set of winter tyres will see you fine on most major and minor routes. If you're heading into the Highlands (Cairngorms or North West coast) then you might need them but very much depends on the forecast.. "usually" most snow is in Jan-Feb...
I'm sure others will have their own view....I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Re chains: In short, no. If conditions are so bad that you’ll need chains on a D3/4 then you’re not going anywhere as the road will either be shut or clogged solid with stuck buses/lorries/vans etc. Plus we have no places to get off the road fit them, at the side of the road would be suicidal with traffic slithering past.
Re winter tyres, I’ve been driving in Heeland winter conditions for over 11 years now and never needed winters on the Disco. “Normal” cars, absolutely, but Disco never, driving to the conditions is the key.

There is a place near Dover who rent them out.. about £70 for a week if I remember correctly, We took them to the Alps so collected them on the way down.. I was supposed to post them back when I got home, but just ended up calling them and buying them as they took the £70 hire off the cost, I feel happier having them in the garage then the boot for winter.. even with the AT3's I think chains will make a good backup.
Here's the place. they had the correct ones in stock for my 255/55 19 Wranglers (at the time).

We are going near loch etive and dalness. It's fairly remote so wanted to make sure we are covered.
Was going to take 4x maxtrax.i have a set is AT2 so should be fine in the snow

That’s west coast, close enough, just pack wellies. If you’re up a single track road that isn’t ploughed or gritted then yes, could be useful. It’s all a case of a combo of “chances are” and “what if”, at least there’s no midgies.

Agreed, worth having. Just practise fitting them before you need to use them in anger. And if serious (listen out for the word “significant” in the local forecast) snow is on the way and you know you’re going out the next day, put them on the night before. At worst nothing comes and you have to take them off. In the rain.
PS Dalness looks absolutely fantastic.

I've needed snow chains twice in the past 12 years in the Highlands, otherwise snow tyres have been fine.
The last time, nothing with tyres was getting over the hill so put chains on the CRV (don't have any the right size for the D3) and it was very capable on them, which my wife and son were very happy about, as they were trapped the other side of the hill!Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

If you change your mind I have a set of chains to fit 17" D3 wheels. Used them a couple of times in the alps.

I have a set of Thule K-Summit XXL K67 Snow Chains, unused, just test fitted. If interested pls let me know. Lots of info online to help determine if they will fit.
I need to move them on, need smaller size (k66) for my car.
