Warm rear right wheel

Seems like I got a “hot” right wheel in the rear today. Noticed it by a funny smell, walked around the vehicle. It wasn’t burning hot but clearly much warmer compared to all three other wheels which were cold. There wasn’t any noise or funky shuddering while driving. The brake disk looked visually ok between the wheel spokes.

Are there any easy ways to determine whether it’s the brake shoes or the caliper that’s stuck? Is it possible for it to be something else with these symptoms?

Thanks.

Digital thermometer, thermal camera even better, on the brakes. Hot disk is caliper sticking, hot drum is parking brake.

Does it have any extra brake dust on that wheel? On my Jeep once I had a caliper stick and I noticed it from that wheel being a lot dustier than the other 3.

Hi,
in my case it was an excessively tight parking brake (too approximate) in the periodic maintenance. It produced an overheating, and a very strong vibration, that destroyed the braking system of that wheel, specifically the left rear.

Thanks guys - the wheels didn’t seem to have any difference in terms of brake dust.. pretty much dustless all of them actually... Whistle

Today, when I tried to pinpoint this further by engaging the EPB in the parking garage - windows down to hear better - driving a bit forward, stopping, engaging, etc. there was a weak squeal. The same happened also when I tried reversing.

Fuel economy has also gotten worse by roughly 1.6 L/100 km, now at 16.8 instead 15.2 - according to the onboard calculator.

I would start by whipping the Caliper off and giving it a good clean, including the slides, you may be lucky.

I don't think you can tell with dust, but if the disc is more of a blue colour then caliper.

You should really service the park brake while the caliper is off to avoid further problems.

Remove shoes and lube arm

Took it to the indy this morning. They took the wheels off and diagnosed it pretty much the same as we here did Thumbs Up

In the front, the brake caliper on the left wheel was stuck. The seals had been trashed, water had entered where it shouldn’t have, some rusting, etc. seems to have happened over a long time. New caliper required. they didn’t think it would make sense to repair the old one. Front brake disks were not warped, plenty of material left in the pads.

In the rear, the right rear wheel brake shoes were loosely stuck but they thought lubing & adjusting would be enough. Plenty of surface left in the shoes, pads and rear disks.

Thanks everyone for your collective hive mind. Thumbs Up

I’m truly shocked how much fuel economy changed. Right before I took the vehicle in I had 16.8 L/100 km. Now having driven ~200 km mixed it’s down to 13.2 L/100 km according to the built in estimator. Shocked

When I got the car it was doing around 14.8 so it has gotten gradually worse and I guess based on this the problem has been on for a longer time - I only noticed it recently.. Of course, I put the increased consumption for winter economy.
