Warn Winch Tray
My warn winch tray, fitted by previous owner has two what look like recovery eyes fitted. Now I've downloaded the installation manual for that winch tray and I can see there are holes there for something but these eyes are rigid and thin and bolted in with M10 bolts. Are they recovery eyes? I can't imagine they'll take much of a loading if there are.
Seperately then would those holes take a loading if I installed rotating shackles there instead???

It’s a recovery eye bolted to where the normal bolts go through.
The bolts are usually high tensile 10.8
You won’t get a swivel recovery point through the hole.Bodsys Brake Bible

If it'll take a load i could always make the hole bigger to get one in there maybe?
It seems to me that because they are rigid they won't take a load from an obscure angle without bending, breaking, snapping.Cogito ergo sum!

It’s been added, it’s not std for the warn kit. Useful to hang the hook on, but as you say, recovery point on its own it may not be so great.
The whole winch tray is bolted 10 melts so won’t come away from the car, but just one bolt I would be a bit concerned. Rather use the big recovery point underneath the winch mount on the car itself. Bodsys Brake Bible

Fair advice. Yeah ok will stick to that. Was just a thought. Rotating shackle would look a lot smarter though Cogito ergo sum!

I'm going to drill the tray on mine on the drivers side to fit a ball and pin tow jaw. On occasion, I have to winch dead rally cars onto trailers and it's easier to hook their trailer to my vehicle and winch that way.
Also gives me easier access if I need to double line the winch.
The plan is to get a piece of 10mm plate steel drilled and tapped to match the tow ball pattern as there's not really enough room behind for nuts and washers.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

That looks like a good way to go.
The double line pull leads me onto my next question though and in part I guess you have already answered it. What sort of loadings will that tray take? Any thoughts on that?
Also, good outlet for the swivel points??Cogito ergo sum!

After speaking with a number of different people including Devon 4x4 they all concluded that the Warn tray is very over engineered and more than upto taking those load forces.
And when you think about it there are only 4 bolts that actually hold the winch in the tray!!!
My swivels came from First Four and are tested and rated as are the shackles 2003 BMW M5- 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

I've got a spare winch tray to go with them.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

These were added by AndrewS years ago and have been perfect for double line pulls.
