Water Leak Top of Windscreen - Not Glass Related

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue, Everytime the car is washed (Hose, Bucket or Jetwash) the roof lining where it meets the windscreen is always left soaking wet.

My initial assumption was the sunroof drains being blocked - They were but only slightly, still I replaced them. STILL WET!

I then dropped the lining again and worked out it must be the windscreen seal as I know its had a replacement screen. New screen ordered and fitted (it had a crack so needed doing) fitted noticed excess silicone from the previous fitter (before I owned the car). Thought job done so washed the car.. SOAKED!

As the 2 obvious reasons were now not so obvious I dropped the lining after soaking it, couldnt see any water, so decided to line the front with blue paper roll to see where was getting wet, and found approx 20cm in from the N/S a nice wet paper towel. Looking inside thinking again it was the windscreen.

No, it wasn't... Just above the screen behind the headlining is what appears to be a double skinned part of metal, that meets just above the screen. Here I found the water filling on the edge before dripping in, over and over.

Its very hard to see where on gods earth this water is coming from, assumptions would say sunroof, but they dont look directly linked, and I cant see how it would travel to this area.

Has anyone had this issue and found the cause?

See photos attached... HELP! Big Cry

Might be worth a read of this:

Half way down page 2 is where I posted what was causing my leak right where yours is.

Thank you both, Will have a look at this! Post looks very interesting...

How does the strip unclip, the front pops off, then there is a big disc shaped one, I presume a trim tool will remove this if I slide it in and lever it?

Ignore that last message..

At the front where the roof drains meet the windscreen there is a white plastic clip - on the inside of the black trim. Do you know the part numbers as both of mine are snapped presumably by the windscreen fitter when he lifted them?

I had this on my previous D4, similar but not the same spot as Narpy. Car was about 3 years old at the time, and had a replacement windscreen so my first assumption was that it was the screen. Took a lot of time to find it, but all along the front there is a weld between two parts of body, about 2 inches back from screen. There was a holes in between about 6 inches in from the outer edge. Guess that when pulling old screen off, somehow sprung a weld. Filled with screen sealant, never leaked again. First step, remove the headliner (not too hard) as it will make a lot more sense then. Good luck.

I have just looked closer at your photos, I didn't pay enough attention to start with, and it looks exactly like mine did. Mine was a 2010, and I notice yours is, so maybe a manufacturing weakness.

So it is about 6 years ago now when I had the problem, and I have no photos. I am sure the fix is from the front, the water is getting in above the screen - ie the screen is fine -and is penetrating from there. What I can't remember is whether the screen had to come off to get access. The final fix was done at Autoglass, although it wasn't their problem, and so they could get the screen off and on easy. I think they had taken it off again looking for the problem, but I don't know if that was necessary. The rubber needs to come off at the top and then see what you can see. One suggestion might be to post on here asking if anyone could post a photo of the top of their D4 with the window out if someone is getting one done. You need to see the join of two pieces of metal from the front.

Sorry I can't give you chapter and verse, but do ask if you think I can help more.

Thanks bud. Windscreen is coming off again Tuesday as the new windscreen they fitted has a lovely scratch across the drivers side that glares horribly in the sun! I'll have a look when they pull it out and get some photos for others!

You should be able to get them to fix it while the screen is out -using the same stuff they use to fix the screen in place, just look above the screen, good luck

Stick - I believe the bit you are referring too is inside the car? If so sealing this part without finding the cause above will allow water to sit in the panels with nowhere to come out and potentially cause issues in the long run. Am I right in thinking you mean seal the part I am point at with the screwdriver?

SOrry if I haven't been clear, I am having to dredge my memory for the details- as I remember it now having thought about it a lot, the leak on the inside was just like your screwdriver point. However, as you say, there is no point in just fixing that as the water is already in. I think there is a similar arrangement from the other side, ie from the screen side. I think the screen has to be out to see it because the screen is bigger then the opening. So when your screen is out tomorrow, have a good look above the opening that you have, I think you will see a joint that you can seal, that should stop the water getting in. I am sorry I cannot be certain, but that is my recollection. Good luck.

Fingers crossed its sorted. Did the seal as per the first link I was sent. Will upload images tomorrow as the D4 seems to have had a sealant put on by LR l, possibly because they found this issue with the D3, however it has become brittle and cracked/shrunk!
