On way to look at a 2009 D4 - what are the things 2 check?

Hi,

So after looking for a 3 for ages - I have managed to find a 4 close enough to my budget to warrant the extra spend. It is a 2009 3.0 diesel - 90k miles on the clock XS.

All looks very good.

I know the basics to check with an LR3, like the belt etc - but what are the key things with a 4?

Are there any known problems that should be sorted by now?

Thanks.

Service history, brakes are they all OK, power steering leaks, normally just "O" rings, smoking on hard acceleration, there is a turbo mod for this.

Excellent thanks - is it the same suspension as the lr3 - so should it have had compressor changed etc?

Do not know if it is the same, but I believe it is a new compressor and I certainly had no issues with the suspension on any of my D4's

Early D4's had a compressor that was more prone to failure. On the test drive, change the ride height a few times. If you get "normal ride height only available", it's on the way out. Although if you change the ride height lots in a short time, it will also refuse to play anyway to stop it overheating and that's normal. If there has been a problem, it's generally been replaced with the later, better one.

The D4 is generally more reliable than the D3, but remember these are expensive beasts if they go wrong still, so getting a warranty is good advice.

An 09 D4 will have the 6 speed box, which is fine, but again on the test drive, do all the usual stuff to check it's changing up and down pretty seamlessly. You might get a bit of lag if you want to take off from stationary quickly. There's a lot written about this here and elsewhere. But don't worry too much about that, it's a feature rather than a fault. There's stuff you can do to address it, or you get used to it.

You should, if you use it briskly notice a definite step up in performance from your D3.
