I agree with Winger.
Ride is not noticeably different, but handling is a huge improvement. I can hustle along at an average 70 on the twisty A roads in the Cotswolds and not really have to work hard at it, to travel at this speed in a D3 would be hard work.
Back in 2004 when I had my first D3 I thought that the engine was superb, quiet, smooth, powerful.....but diesels have moved on very fast. Try any car that has the Merc 320 diesel (single turbo, 3.0l, V6). The D4 is noisey and gruff at low engine speeds in comparison. The D4 engine improves as revs increase and it starts to sound "good" at around 2200rpm. it's a very good engine but it's not "great". It's better in the XF though, had one for a couple of months and it really was excellent. 2011 D4 Landmark, Mini Cooper SD Clubman, Range Rover Vogue SE

Je regret rien!  Mine's a great improvement on my old D3. Smooth, comfortable and good looking.
