What's the factory fill Oil for the V8 Petrol?

15,000 service booked for this week - just weighing up whether to supply my own Mobil1 5w30 - or leave them to use the oil that LR use in-house?

Local US stealership said they use a non-synthetic oil, which rather surprised me Shocked

Anyone know what LR use for the V8 (Brand)?

use Semi synthetic Castrol magnatec Thumbs Up

castrol are the main design team for oil supply for Land Rover..They do all the research and development for all their engine so you can't go wrong with their product
 TLO has left the building.......
I no longer work for a Landrover Dealer

A quick question TLO, is the oil sold in the green Land Rover branded bottles made by Castrol? and is it fully or semi sythetic?

I had a discussion with my dealer a while ago after they charged me about £90 for oil in a service. (no brand specified on the bill)

When I subsequently went into the parts dept and asked for a 1 litre top up of the 'same oil you guys use in the workshop' I was given a Land Rover branded bottle, which cost about £6. When I then questioned why the oil on the service bill was much more expensive, they said that they use Mobil1 fully synthetic in the service bay.

The next service I bought my own oil from parts, and left the bottles in the car for the workshop!

Sorry to hijack the post Embarassed but it is a bit relevant Whistle

Gareth - very relevant, seeing as my stealership are effectively saying 'we'll use the LR stuff', then saying 'but it's not synthetic'.......

Now my oil and oil change are FREE for life here, so I'm looking at freeness Vs dropping a fair few bucks on some Moby1, just because I believe it's a great product, and have used it for the last 20 years in all my cars.

I'm probably mad to even be thinking of spending $$$ instead of accepting the freeness Shocked

Gareth

the oil in the cans for Disco3 STC50527 & STC50528 is the semi synth 5w 30...same oil as used in the td5 engines (Disco 2)

Most dealers (including ourselves) use bulk oil from the major suppliers.
So unless they also buy the 1ltr bottles from the same source it won't be the same.

unofficially... Whistle you could save yourself quite a few quid by supplying the oil for your own service..."But i didn't tell you that.....right"

I could be wrong, but wouldn't the V8 petrol use a different oil to the diesel engines?

Jonty - looks to be the same 5W30 Spec for V8 and TDi

I found the capacity on another LR site - quoted as 8.5 qts from dry - or 8.1 qts for a normal oil+filter change

Quick visit to local WallyMart and CostCo turned up zero Mobil1 5W30 - no stock what so ever! Big Cry

So I may have the decision made for me, due to lack of viable alternatives Censored

Eventually found some Mobil1 5W30 at a local PepBoys (US version of Halfrauds) - but this was about the fith place I'd checked before finding some!

Later found this on the US Mobil1 website:

We regret the limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oil. Due to the impact of Hurricane Ike on our raw material suppliers, we are experiencing limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oils. We appreciate your loyalty to the Mobil 1 brand and the trust you have placed in our products. We are working quickly to have your choice of Mobil 1 motor oils available at normal levels as soon as possible. Thank you for you patience.

Ended up going with the in-warranty recommendation on the Mobil1 website, fully synthetic 5w30 for SUV.

At least I'm helping keep Exxon Mobil profitable! Big Cry

Although at $7.53 per Qt, including tax - I suspect that's way cheaper than Moby1 in Blighty.

That would be £4.60 for a Qt or £4.86 a liter

When was the last time Moby1 was that cheap in Blighty? Thumbs Up
