Help please!! On my way up to Scotland, having travelled about 250 miles, I get the 'BONG' and FAULT notice
on the screen and loose what I can only describe as Turbo power. Having stopped and restarted the fault dissappears and I continue on my merry way. However on the way home it does it again after another 300 miles.
Once again I stop and restart and once again it clears and I reach home safely. Is my turbo on the way out after 45K on the clock? I will get it checked for codes at the stealers tomorrow but has anyone got any ideas...

disconutter, would you be travelling in hilly country with some nice
long gradients, dropping a gear , or two to maintain your road speed
If so, I have had this a few times, LR have not been able to tell me
what it is, but I would think it is heat related as every time it happens
you hear the fan comming in. And there are no advance warnings
on the dash as all shows normal, my main suspect was the EGT
( exhaust gas temp )but I have no way to check, engine temp
was number 2. Now I have been told by Heine, who has an after
market plug in system which can read the engine temp on the fly,
has seen a marked increase in engine temp in hilly country, whilst
the dash temp gauge stays at normal temp It may a good
idea just to check for blockages in the radiator etc.
PS: My EGR's have been blanked for nearly two years and it's
not them causing the problem. D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.

Just to elaborate on this, My car went through a couple of days of "Engine System fault" on our return from Morocco last month. It was at altitude (about 4000ft - 5000ft) and the ambient air temp was about 40 degrees celsius.
Everytime I accelerated to overtake slower vehicles, the gearbox would kick down, and I would get about 2 -3 seconds of power, then bong! engine system fault, Letter F in the gear selector indicator, massive power loss, then after coming to a stop and switching off it would cycle through a whole load of faults like Transmission, suspension, HDC, ABS, Park Brake.
It was very dangerous, and in the end I lost confidence and drove slower without overtaking.
When we got chance we read the fault codes and it seemed to be a low fuel rail pressure.
After returning to Spain and England, and lower temps/altitude there has been no reccurence.
The car has just been serviced and a new fuel filter fitted.
It might be the answer to your issues?

Just to elaborate, I was on the M74 having just crossed into Scotland (so its not particularly hilly) doing around the 70 mark, (so I'm not pushing it hard) when it first occured. Temperature guage is showing normal. I just assumed it was turbo related with the management system turning something off to protect it? Another observation is that it was quite smoky without the turbo. I am booked in tomorrow to check the codes, so hopefully i will have some idea then. Thanks for the input and watch this space. Disconutter, this is exactly what mine is doing - I think its temperature related, because is never does it unless you've been driving for an hour or so - and the ambient has to be fairly high and normally straight after kickdown.
My intercooler is in need of cleaning, but its not something the dealer has ever commented on.
They have read the fault codes and its fuel pressure - they have changed the fuel filter, but that didn't help.
Its going back in again on Tuesday for possibly a few days so they can have a good look at it.
Funnily enough, since I booked it in, the service warning has come on- giving me 200 miles notice! So I subsequently booked that in too at the same time.
I'll let you know any more info when I have it! Mark.

I thought that it was essential to remove the butterfly when you blank the EGRs? In my laymans speak surely if you block the EGR pipes and leave the butterfly you will starve the engine of air because nothing can go up the egr pipe (cos of the blank) and in certain circumstances (when the EGR valves would have opened) there is a restriction in the air intake (a closed butterfly flap)?
Happy to be corrected by someone with more knowledge but it may be that your only problem is that you need to remove the butterfly?

I hope your right... I didnt realize it was essential to remove the butterfly!!!!! In recent weeks prior to blanking off the valves it was smoking like a good'un under heavy accelleration. I thought (wrongly) blanking off the valves would eliminate this.
Its just possible you may have saved me a few hundred quid.. ONE LIFE - SO LIVE IT!!!
