Looks like a very early test vehicle to me.... probably built to test the drivetrain and / or suspension... lights are basic parts bin stuff to make it legal

Yup, prototype, they are the same (or similar) to these - http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/displayima...&pos=4

Also notice the bagging over the wheelarch for the disguise. Where did you turn the photo up from?

My parents saw a RRS all camo'd up on the Dover Calais ferry on Sunday. It was white with the black camo tape on, big holes in the rear bumper and lots of gear in the back. Could be testing the TDV8. The picture in question could be the short wheel based disco seen last year that could be next Defender. The Freelander prototypes also have similar lights (not the mules) Intrested to see the whole and where did it come from.

it came from an instruction booklet i stumbled across which shows how (or rather how not) to load a Disco3 on a transporter

Ironically, it was buried deep ona volvo website!!

Link to the entire doc is here http://web.volvo.com/vlc/pdf_files/New%20Discovery.pdf

Those test vehicles were seen alot, especially in the States. The light is camo'd up. In the early days of testing the front was covered, the roof had an extra bit on as did the sides and back. Windows were also tapped up and the usual body stripes used

I'm pretty sure it's a method of preventing battery drain when they are sent by sea, the isolator will be removed by the recieving dealer and it prevents shipping staff having to use tools to dis / re - connect the battery
