Wheel stud spinning

Hi all. I went to put on my new cooper stt on the 17inchers the other day and found that i couldnt undo the locking wheel nut, it eventually budged but not the nut the stud is slipping round on the hub (i think) Has anyone had this prob before and how did you fix it? any info would be greatfully received. Cheers Guy.

Check if it is not your locknut socket that is slipping on the locknut!!The locknut socket is not very strong and opens up(flares) very easy.I had to hammer my socet back into shape to get a tight fit on the nut to loosen it.I am dumping the locknut for this very reason.....don't need to battle far away from help.

Why no????? If the stud is spinning too its the only way you will get it off. chances are thats what it has been put on with.

Do i not remember a thread with you Censored about with a locking wheel nut for ages????
If the locking socket dont work beat a impact 6 side socket on with a hammer then use impact gun that will shift it Thumbs Up

The reason I say NO is, and only if its a Locking Nut fooked is from experience you need control over the removal. Using a Wiz gun can complicate the removal, and damage the lock nut further.

The best way if the lock nut is knackered, and the aligning holes are burred/worn is this

You need to misalign the locking key so that the indents don't all line up, then whack it hard and even, removal is easy after that.

But the origninal post says the Stud is moving Shocked if thats the case I would'nt know what to advise apart from low loader to dealer

It all depends if it is the stud turning in the hub flange or the lugs passing over the locker nut.If it is the stud turning a wizzy gun would be worth a try as the speed helps or if the key is passing then use a chiesel to knock the locker round.

I haven't heard of a stud spinning on a D3. I think that it more likely to be the locking nut.

Well thanks for all that advise and opinions, I will carefully attempt removal at the weekend and report on a success or a failure.

I know it wont directly help now, but after having my tyres changed, the first thing I do when getting home is loosen (one by one) all the wheel nuts and torque them up myself, as the tyre guys use their air guns, and this almost always overtightens the nuts.
