just tried these:



and although I'd posted that they wouldnt fit, they do. They need new wheelnuts (the earlier L322 type, slimmer shank, black ones), and as these are usually from a L322 FFRR, they usually have 255/50x20 tyres (OK size wise), but only weight rated at 109, not the 111 needed for D3. I've never seen 255/50's at 111, so you might end up having to use 275/45x20s, which you can get at 114.

Update - there are two versions of this style (and they look the same, just subtle differenece in the casting), a pre and post 2006. For earlier ones, see above, for later ones, they have a larger wheelnut hole, and use the same wheelnuts as RRS, D3 and post 2006 FFRR)

I am fairly new to this forum and have found it very useful but I have a question that I hope you guys can help me with??

I am just about to buy a set of 20" RRS v spoke original wheels with 275/40-20 Continental Sport Contact tyres and although I have have read about the load ratings and at present is 111 on my Disco, the new tyres would be 106. Can anyone tell me if this is actually something to worry about or would this be perfectly safe on my Disco? Also any advice and problems or issues with fitting these wheels and tyres would be appreciated.

They underrated therefore more likely to puncture and possibly blow out. Your insurance will probably be invalid too

Get some that meet or exceed the LR specs and don't take risks with the only bit of your vehicle that's in contact with the road....

This was a forum member's 2nd blow out that day on 18" RRS tyres (offroading in Peaks), every one on "proper" weight rated D3 tyres had no problems whatsoever.

106 is too low, and 40 series will also give lower gearing. Its not worth it. I've had 275/45's on my 20" RRS V spokes.

Your insurer wouldnt pay out in the event of a claim if it was found that the cause of the claim was underated tyres. Also, even if yoy fit the correct spec, you need to tell your insurer, as NFU add 10% to the preminum for non standard alloys. Their statement to me was, "are these an option at time of purchase", if not then extra 10%, and 20"'s arent a brochure option.

Any advice on putting 295/40-20 Dunlop tyres instead as these seem to be quite a bit cheaper than the equivelant Pirellis or Continentals??

are the dunlops rated at 111 or higher. I thought all the 40 series tyres I had seen were 109 or lower.

Thanks for your advice. Having spent a couple of hours speaking to tyre manufacturer's technical departments I eventually decided on Continental Cross Contact UHP rated at 110 XL in 275/45-20 which are the nearest match in a good quality tyre. All ordered and should arrive tomorrow !! Very Happy

The Dunlop's were rated at 106

Had already run a set of Conti CC UHP's in 295/40/20 - the ride is a bit harsh!
My newest tyres are Grabber UHP's in 295/45/20 - by far the best tyre for the 20".
top of my head - i think the load rating is 114.
Ride is much smoother, and they look meatier.

oops, sorry, just noticed you've ordered the Conti's - they aint too bad Embarassed

I do realise they are not the correct load rating but having spoken to various technical departments if I understood correctly the 111 load rating was a maximun of 4.5 tonnes (inc car) which I am never going to drive around with that kind of weight in the car.

I did want to go for the 295/45-20 but having looked at the cost difference with the 275's and having been told by Continental that the 275/45-20 was the closest match to my 255/55-19 (rolling circumference) that are already on the car. This means that I can still get away with my 19" spare too as I understand it Smile

With all respect mactwo ..whatever we or the advisors think about the rating v maximum weights.. the actual load rating does not meet the manufacturers specification. If that is what the advisors state, ask them to put it in writing and to accept liability ..because as sure as hell your insurers won't ....neither will LR for any related warranty claims against them. The guidlines are laid out clearly in the contruction and use regs and you as a driver have a legal responsibility to ensure that tyres fitted meet the OEM specification.

Not trying to be the big one here...but just trying to ensure you realise the implications Thumbs Up

Just a note on the Grabber 295/45/20 - it is definately a 114XL load rating.
And at only £105 incl VAT & delivery

Also per slimers chart, the speedo reading is exact with this tyre.
[tested against my Road Angel].

BUT- you'll need to check that with the extra width, they don't foul with the V Spoke wheels!!!
Mine don't, but I run Stormers and they have quite an offset.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at a tire size calculator I found the link to in these forums somewhere and ended up with this:

Nothing in it really but seemed the 275/45-20's are just slightly closer to the factory fit on circumference and speedo difference. The ride is a little harder than before and there is more tyre noise but the car feels a lot more solid to me and looks great! Thumbs Up

Ronp....I was a little worried the 295's would be a little too big. Can you notice much difference through the steering with these? Would be great to see a picture of your car with em on Very Happy
