Which to buy - 2005 S or 2006 SE |
|
Found two nice examples (in Ireland where examples are few and far between).
The first is a 2005 S AT with 100k miles - FSH, never towed, new tires and Irish MOT for €15.2 (about 13k in real money)
The second is a 2006 SE (MT) with 60k miles - FSH, mint, and same long MOT for €19.5k (16k in sterling).
Both are in great nick - question is whether the later badged, lower mileage SE is worth the extra 4k. I could afford it (juuuusst) but not entirely sure that its worth the price difference.
How heavy should the mileage difference weigh in my claculations?
Any other thoughts on the two?
(Ignore prices comparisions with the UK - our tax laws make bringing one in from the UK totally impractical)
Any help very much appreciated

I would choose auto over manual, that's me though. And a cheaper vehicle.
Newer lower mileage better spec SE (the spec difference may not be as great on Irish spec, here you get leather and nav) with slight minus of being manual seems the most sensible. Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
"What is the first rule when overlanding?"
I would Reply:
"Duratrac"

If they were both Auto it would be a no brainier, go for the SE but I'm not a fan of the manual D3. Suggest driving both and decide on the basis of which one you can live with easiest and enjoy most 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Do your research on Autotrader(dot CO dot UK, not IE), get booked on Aer Fungus, over to England, make a day of it and buy one here. You'll have to transfer the vehicle back to the Free State but its a formality.
You know the score, all 4x4's get worked hard in Ireland, whereas half of them over here never see further than the school run. Also, big miles here generally mean lots of nice smooth motorway whereas at home it means Dublin to Cork via Ballybunion!

The 05 is just off its 105k service, which is a biggie, the 06 is 2 years away.
Is the S leather or cloth seats and is that important to you? I'd pay £1000 for leather.
You say you're Dublin based...I'm London based and the manual is a bit a of a bore in traffic.
Over to you..

Go for the newer one. Less miles normally means less problems.
I've owned both a manual and an auto. The manual will give you slightly better MPG and its a very good gear change. The auto is excellent though and it would be difficult for me to go back to manual now.
If in doubt try them both out and I'm sure one will gravitate to the top. A 4k price difference seems a little steep but you may be able to haggle....

You are aware of the current Eire taxes on 2nd hand imported vehicles?
I know it was being contested a few years back (as VAT has already been paid on the car) but guess it wasn't successful......

Thanks very much for the help and lots of food for thought - hadnt factored in the 105k service into the equation.
Bringing a car in from the UK just isnt an option - the VRT rules are criminal - for example if I was to bring in the SE 2006 model above from the UK it'd cost a princely €7300 to register it here.
The choice seems to come down to the benefit of the autobox and 4k in your pocket v higher spec, less mileage and potentially better resale value.
Interiors of both are cloth so that doesnt particularly come into it.
These are the cars if anything jumps out - already haggled them down a bit (hope I'm not breaking any forum rules)

After seeing the pics it would be an easy choice for me as I just don't think the Maya Gold paint works at all, in fact I think it's awful sorry .
Tonga green suits the car so much better and with the auto box is the leader in my book. As others say, factor in the cost of the big service 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

For my tupence worth...
take the Auto everytime...
at 100k I bet most things that normally ware out around the 90K mark will have been changed (ie bearings, disks, ARB, a selection of parking sensors)
so all you need to look out for is the 105k service (£600-£800 over here).
use the rest of the £4k on buying toys to go with your new purchase
but like everything... you pays your money you takes your chances...

Get the Auto and spend the saved money upping the spec to SE with second hand parts if you feel you want to. 2014 D4 XS
2005 D3 SE - Gone
