Will a new TC completely resolve rev surging and shuddering?
Hi, I recently bought a 2005 D3 auto, and could tell the gearbox wasn’t 100% on the test drive, but the rest of the car was solid and was only £5k- so took a punt.
I was hoping a flush would resolve the issue, but after reading all the service history last night it appears it has already been done, obviously not fixing the issue.
Now my question is- Would paying for a new TC to be fitted completely fix the dreaded rev surging and shuddering issues? I would only want to pay the considerable sum if it was 100% fixed after. Can there be residual damage and issues to the actual gear box? If it won’t completely fix the issue, I might just put up with it as it’s not toooo bad, just gets on my nerves a bit. Hope that makes sense!
Cheers!

Depending on how long it's been juddering will be the best guide for damage to the box.
It could be fine with the TC changed, or it could need a box rebuild due to worn clutch plates etc.
The judders will only get worse and worse, affecting driving and also fuel economy.
I would get it checked and let a proper gearbox specialist give verdict on it.

Hmm right ok. It very rarely judders to be fair, and the revs only surge up and down when I’ve completely lifted off the accelerator and at low speeds, so hopefully it hasn’t been doing it too long.
I think I’m leaning towards having it fixed because it would be the cowards way out selling it on! Just wondered if there were horror stories of people paying all that money and it not working!

Lol joking aside I would have considered breaking but the rest of the car has been maintained so well it would be a shame!

Fixes everything.
My D3’s gearbox has it’s fluid double flushed at 80k, new TC at 140k and that only lasted until 162k when the box needed rebuilt. 4k later engine died and car was scrapped, so wishing I hadn’t bothered.

Mime didn't judder, only surging revs. I had a recon TC new B and E clutch, 6 new accumulators, a full flush new filter, and new stator bush.
10,000 miles on its still as good as new. The fluid was not burned so I was in time.05 V8 HSE Bonatti Grey

I had similar issues with ours at 102k.
It had been juddering for about 2k.
I took it to Bristol Transmissions - hoping for diagnosis that TC would fix it.
They thought it may be OK with just TC but would be a matter of time until it was problematic again.
Because we plan to keep the car we shelled out for box rebuild and TC replacement.
They also changed rear propshaft due to bearing wear.
Drives so nicely now but cost 3k.
If the car is not a keeper maybe the TC will keep you out of trouble for a whileBonatti Grey with Tundra, Duratracs, DISCO3 sticker, De-badged then rebadged in black, EGRs blanked - still saving for IC and BAS remap...

I’d imagine the vultures need regular feeding .....
TBH, as cars seem to depreciate very much faster (ok, they’re cheaper to start with) on your rainy island I think it makes sense to break for spares rather than rebuild unless a. Money is no object, b. Even then. Here, since I’m driving a 13 year old vehicle worth in excess of 20000 eur, it makes sense to fix. Off the cuff, no excel involved.

Yeah I think I'm leaning towards just having the TC replaced, for a £5k car its hard to justify £3k for a gearbox rebuild - the gearbox seems smooth other than the typical TC symptoms!

If the rest of the car is good. Fix it.
That’s what I’ve done with mine. 54 plate hse, had 175,*** when it went in for a full overhaul.
Full belts and tensioners, oil and water pump, power steering pump, new brake servo and master cylinder, 2 wheel bearings, a driveshaft, 8 new cv boots, new arbs front and rear, new turbo, diff rebuilt and 4 new air struts and some brake flexes. Picked it up start of June and I’ll hit 180,000 tomorrow with it.
That lot will see me another 5 years or more out it.
It’s only money

Very true. Which is probably for the best because I've also just booked it in for 2x lower control arms, 2x track rods, turbo pipe, and brake lines
