Winch Install - Ground
Hi all,
So where do people ground their winches and why?
I have seen that lots go to the bolt behind the main battery but what is wrong with using any of the other grounding points?
I also have the option of the grounding point on the Stop/Start Battery.
Thoughts and recommendations please

Earth
I took mine to the main battery earth. Reason being I read a lot about earthing on here, someone with a recovery truck earthed to the chassis and burned out loads of wires to lights etc. The power takes the fastest point to the earth of the battery, consequently small wires get fried.
Not an expert and not sure its true BUT Disco 4 electrics being sensitive at the best of times I didnt want to chance it.
Incidentally I have a second Aux battery in the no2 position. I considered connecting the winch to that, the advice from Australia (land of winches) was to go for the main battery. Reason being that it is the most central point from the other two power sources (the alternator and the 2nd battery).
Not by any means an expert, practically my winch works great.Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

Thanks for the replies guys.
Will go for main battery. not much harder and sounds like least risk.
Unfortunalty I don't have a 2nd battery location under the bonnet as I have the later D4 with all the Stop/Start gubbins in that hole But I am looking at other options for leisure battery to run fridge and camping lights etc.
Thanks again all. Dorian Woolger

The small battery is no where near sufficient to run the earth back to for the winch. I'd run them both to the main battery.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Thanks will look him up.
I was not thinking for connecting to the small battery but using the same grounding point which is a decent size lug attached to the body.
I am going to use the main battery point though. Cable now run. just waiting for the lugs to arrive Dorian Woolger
