Winch issue (was URGENT - TFC phone number)

NJF and me are replacing his broken winch cable - about to stress the cable, fully laid out and now the winch won't work...

Need someone to urgently confirm either:

The number on TFC's website is his mobile.

or

Can someone PM me the mobile number.

(TFC fitted it all and he may know what the problem is...we hope...)

(NJF left his phone at home... Rolling Eyes )

Well, that was a bit of a mystery. Confused

Winch worked fine when we spooled the new rope on. Then we moved a few hundred meters down the road, where there's more space to stress the new rope and an incline to help with the load. We spooled out nearly 30m, connected the load vehicle and ... "CLICK" ... no winch drive. Everything was properly set up and in its correct place, and all fuses, etc appeared to be normal. So we switched all off, disconnected and set it up again. "CLICK", said the winch (or its solenoid).

A quick call to TFC confirmed that we didn't seem to be doing anything too daft. After a hour of scratching our heads and carefully applying a rubber mallet to the winch housing, it was still refusing to play ball. Accepting defeat, we decided to take the rope off. For no particular reason, I pressed the switch one last time and ... the winch worked normally.

I have no idea why. Confused

Have you been going through a lot of muddy water of late. Sometimes the drain in the bottom of the motor lets water in then, gets blocked stopping the water from draining back out.

Check that all the connections are OK Thumbs Up

Car's been clean and dry for quite a while. Embarassed All connections appear to be sound and clean.

Sometimes winch switching solenoids fail.

If it happens again, try swapping solenoids around (if you can).

A good firm tap on the Solenoid works as well (sometimes)

Possibly need to clean out the solenoids. I had the same problem on my cheaper Tmax winch on the Defender - the solenoids were "full" of mud and clay and worked intermittently. I left mine too long before I checked it and it ended up sounding like a tractor...

Thanks for the advice. I'll take a look at it again when I meet up with TFC in Tunisia in a couple of weeks and add solenoid cleaning to my list of things to do.

Another curiosity when pulling the rope out for the final pull (i.e., the second pull after the winch started working again) was that we felt a regular "shunt" or "jump" as the cable spooled off the drum. It wasn't quite in sync with the drum revolution, but it was quite noticeable. There was no abnormal resistance, though, and the clutch was fully off. The winch worked fine for the second pull.

If the solenoids are past help, change them for a solid state 'albright' we have found with the Warn 8274's on defenders they run much better with Albrights fitted than standard solenoids.
