am about to put a hidden winch on my D4, having got a s/h plate off here (sorry, Uncle Ray!).
What size to people typically use? This is for emergency use only, not competition or me trying to get stuck, and the expected number of times I'll need to use it is 0.
Was going to get the Superwinch Tiger Shark 9500lb, but some back-of-envelope calculations using the usual rule of thumb suggests the 11500lb one is perhaps a better size. Anyone have experience of working with the 9500b on a expedition-loaded D4 - enough for occasional use, or not? The price difference is significant enough to make it serious issue.

Agreed the D4 is nearly 3 tons - however a winch on a vehicle is for pulling, not lifting.
If you need to put anything like 3te tension on a winch there is danger of summat breaking.
If you have never been trained or even just shown the proper way to use one then the first 'emergency' is not the time to try it.
Just my take on it having seen a lot of winch action, both properly controlled and extreme Muppetry Stew,
2010 D4 gone but I really loved it

D4 fully loaded plus some ground one would pull with it when stuck is more than achievable on double pull with 9500lb winch with good angle and control
