Sorry to hear that DG, Sad I hope you do have that covered. Was it from the front car, were you too close or just bad luck?

Mine went in Saturday - passing an L200 on the A31 and bang! 2ft crack from directly in front of passenger's face diagonally down to in front of driver. Bloody glad the screen held, as the object was fist sized and unlikely to play nicely if it had come through the screen.

Errr no.. I'm not a tailgater. It was about 830pm and traffic was light tbh.

Both the wife and I felt that nothing hit the screen there was ever such a small sound and there it was Sad

Spooky! I was driving along, minding my own business in the depths of Lincolnshire a few weeks ago, and there was the tiniest noise followed by a small crack which grew and grew, eventually it must have been a couple of feet long.

Windscreen duly replaced, and the first outing was to the LRO show at Peterborough. Just when we thought we'd had a good day, whilst travelling back up the A1 (in Lincolnshire again!), a plonker on a motorbike pulled out in front of us. Not a problem, but he then thought he'd try to turn around and talk to his pillion. Drifting over to the c**p in the gutter, it flings a stone up and puts a small crack in the new screen. Fortunately it was repairable, but in 30 odd years of driving I've never had a screen go until last November when we had the one on the Mini broken.

Anyone want a Bali blue D4 HSE? 41,000 miles. I'm getting paranoid about taking it out, especially into Lincolnshire!

If your D3 is quite old (mine is 05) I would recommend taking a look at the paint work underneath the sealant that they remove before fitting the new screen. Probably due to damage to paint when previous sealant removed, I have early signs or corrosion that I fixed at the time, but next time the screen needs replacing, I may get it done at a local body shop and ask the fitter to do the job in two stages - remove and then refit.

Chap from Autoglass said they do that frequently. Of course, you may have the skills etc to do the repair yourself. Nothing is visible with the screen fitted.

Or, simply a case of out of sight out of mind Whistle

On closer inspection something has hit the rubber surround at the point where the crack starts Thumbs Up

DG, I had the same problem as I got a tiny stone chip just under the passenger wiper blade, from that small beginning a large crack grew.
I have since had the screen replaced with a genuine one, but to try and prevent it happening again I have put some clear aircraft leading edge tape in the black area where the wipers park. It is barely noticeable from the outside.
To get the tape to lay down smooth and flat with no bubbles make up a mixture of warm water (1/2 small bucket) with a good 1/2 cup of isopropyl (or metho) with a spoon of dish washing liquid in it. Wash the area thoroughly and then wet the area with the brew just made up. As you peel the backing off wet it thoroughly and apply to the screen. It will then be able to be positioned without so far adhering to the screen. Then get a plastic squeegee or something similar and work the water mixture out and there will be no bubbles. When dry just clean with some turpentine to get any sticky residue off the tape. At that point a refreshing beverage of your choice is in order.

Last time mine screen cracked - I was hit by a stone from the car in lane 1, which was some way in front - it was actually caught in the BV - about 2 frames - I would have sworn it had come from the other carriageway, but playing back the BV footage you could see it come in.

@PF I like the brew bit at the end 8) ...have to say though that this is my first windscreen issue in nearly 30 years so I'm not anticipating an early repetition ( he says knowing how much he's going to regret saying that)

@AF it was dark but good point the BV might have picked it up I'll take a look Smile Thumbs Up
