At the rear of my D3 just behind the rear bumper there are wobbling weights either side of the vehicle, attached to what I assume is the chassis.
I have just discovered them this morning as I have a knocking noise coming from the rear. The drivers side one appears to be isolated and is not knocking the chassis but the passenger side is indeed knocking against metalwork.
Two questions....what are they? (I'm very curious) and as the passenger one is knocking, how is it repaired? I'm not 100% certain it is causing the problem but it seems like the best place to start.
Many thanks in advance.

After now reading about harmonic dampers I now know all about them, but I don't seem to be able to find anything regarding the repair of them. Any hints?

The D4 has the same things and we seem to be getting 'knocking noises' when towing which could be coming from this area - so I too would be interested to here others thoughts on this. LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

Quite a high % of owners who have suspected their weights found that the knocking issue was caused by something else. The exception to this is usually those with tow electrics as the wiring has been known to snag the weights.
Spare wheel is a common cause of knocking. Check the tyre pressure is ok and then tighten the winch until the ratchet clicks. Of course, you may have done this already but I mention it for completeness.
