Wrapping

Just thought i'd share this with you as its a relatively easy mod. Decided the aluminium strips from my side steps needed smartening up for my new to me Fuji D4 so thought i would give Vinyl Wrapping a go.......
Well done 1 in just over an hour and i am very pleased with the results, it covered up all the blemished and marks, and IMO look alot better! Just hope they last if they get hit by grit from the roads!
So here is my progress, ill post another 1 once theyre back together! Thumbs Up

Running Boards

Looks good I've just spent £250 on a new set of boards and the aluminium strips on the old ones were dented, scored and had fallen off the boards.
I'm considering repairing them and putting them back on, and would be interested in who supplied the wraps and how much they were.
Also how are you going to fix the strips back on the boards, the original rivet holes in mine are a bit Censored .
The new boards seem to use what looks like self tappers.
Thanks DRW

DRW, This is the stuff I've bought, http://www.mdpsupplies.co.uk/vehiclewrappingmatt.asp (Matt Airelease)
If your doing the aluminium strips you'll need 3 meters to get the length, then I got a heat gun for about £12 from screwfix, was dubious about using the future Mrs Skep's hair dryer!
It has covered up the small dent on mine but you can still see it, if you do wrap them I suggest filling and levelling! But mine will do for now!
The holes on mine are still pretty good, I'm hoping to use rivets again, i think they'll secure them enough.. I did remove mine rather than them falling off though! Whistle
If you get chance could you measure how long the self tapping screws are, if I can source some quickly I may go down that route.

Indeed...black would look good....out of interest,I fixed mine back on using self-tappers (4 each side) and there is plenty of clearance behind so the length of the screw itself isn't much of an issue....just make sure you line up the screw slots all the same way,or your OCD wife will mention it.... Self Tappers

Hi Skep the self tappers look like 10 mm in total length, stubby little Censored and about 3mm wide across the threads.
Looking at my old strips, I think I'm going to drill new holes and go back down the rivet route.
I'll need to use filler, Rolling Eyes mine look as if someones taken a plough down the length of it Embarassed
Going to have alook at the websie, I already have a hot air paint stripper so won't have to use SWMBOs hair dryer! Thumbs Up

I was hoping to fix them from the back if possible for aesthetics, I think as DRW says 10mm self tappers might do the job, if I can find some suitable I think I'll try that route, easier to remove if the wrap doesn't work out!

I've just got some self tappers from B&Q, 6mm x 20mm look about perfect (£7.44 for 25), ill add a spring washer so they don't rattle loose then can easily be removed if needs be without the use of an angle grinder or drill to remove the rivets!
Now just need to reassemble and get the steps on! (In between wedding planning and the rugby) maybe next weeks job then!

I could probably get them painted black if there was enough demand to make it worth getting a batch done Confused Probably a lot cheaper to wrap them but will make some inquiries if there's serious interest?

Side steps have come down in price, have manged to get the edge strips a bit cheaper too

With regards to wrapping I'm just worried about stone chips in the vulnerable area behind the front wheel, there were enough marks in the aluminium, I imagine paint would chip the same, but only time will tell!
Would a powder coat be more hardy? I guess that wouldn't be viable though with cost.
