Xenon & HID lights

Can someone explain the difference between Bi-Xenon and HID headlights ?
Are these the same or quite different?
Or am I asking a dumb question ....

As far as I know, it's the same thing, but I could be wrong.

But, I think the Bi-Xenon refers to the low beam being Xenon and the High beam being filament. Well, that's what I was told anyway.

HID (High Intensity Discharge) is the technology used in the lighting, it's been used for many years for floodlighting large areas and energy efficient streetlighting, typically the lamps were (are) filled with Sodium gas, to give a whiter light, Xenon gas is used in automotive systems, this also allows a quicker strike-up /warm up time with the trade-off of requiring a high voltage strike up (12-22kV depending upon the system) Metal Halide discharge lamps produce a cleaner, broader spectrum light but have very long strike-up / warm up times and are therefore not suitable for vehicle use. The other benefit of Xenon filled lamps is that they do not suffer the traditional re-strike delay, although restriking a warm (hot) Xenon lamp will reduce its operational life, but not dramatically.

The 'Bi Xenon' is a LR trade name for the configuration of the lighting systems and is described as:-
"Bi-xenon headlamps use a single xenon lamp to produce both the high beam and the low beam. The full light output is used to produce the high beam, while the low beam is formed by moving a shutter between the bulb and the lens, thus blocking off a portion of the light."

OK then TFC,

When you look at each headligh cluster, diagonally below the main headlight and towards the grill is another light therein containing a globe.

When I switch to high beam, this light comes on. What is it for?

So I take it that the halgen light is just there to light up in front of the car, where the Xenon light overreaches when on High Beam?

(And the XS900's are there to light up beyond where the Xenons can't reach!)

The main halogen light is to give the ability to "flash" your lights (something that the HID's cannot do succesfully).

On the vehicles equiped with adaptive lights the other halogen bulbs are used to fill around corners, and are selectively enabled.

Yeah, I already knew about the side lights, it was just the front ones.
