This is under the tips and tricks category; I use a Yakima Rack on my Disco3, landing pads, control towers and cross bars. The landing pads (4x) stay on the factory side rails, the towers/bars can be easily removed and stowed when not in use. The landing pads come with a clip on cover that fits over them when they are not in use - it's the covers that whistle, through a tiny gap between them and the pads.
To silent them simply cut a short length of low density weather strip (1/4" (6mm) x 1/2" (12mm) cross section) and stick it underneath the cover's leading and trailing edges.
