Yellow brake warning on - Changing brake pads. |
|
Yellow warning light came on yesterday so looking to replace the pads – probably done 18k on them.
Anyway, rather than pay dealer rates was going to attempt to change them with my neighbours son who trained as a mechanic for a few years then gave it up.
Looking to buy standard LR pads but have couple of quick questions.
• Is it an easy enough job to do? How sensitive is the reservoir?
• Is the D3 and D4 the same process? – can I use the Bodsy Brake Bible
• Any specialist tools required – I don’t believe I need a computer to turn the warning light off
• LR pads seem to be Ferrodo – is it cheaper to buy theirs instead?
Any useful tips greatly received. Last of the D4 HSE...

When I changed mine, it was a pretty straight forward - bodsy brake bible is great especially for the rear brakes. The front brakes are exactly the same as many other cars. I think you need a 7mm Allen key which is not a normal Allen key, however you can dedicated Brake Allen keys for next to nothing.
Make sure you have some copper slip as well. 15 3.0 RRS HSE - Silver

No allen key needed for front pads - its all socket work (and an open ended spanner to stop the guides spinning when you undo the bolts)
it almost takes longer to jack the car up, stick it on axle stands and remove the wheels as it does change the front pads

Thanks guys - that's what I needed to hear!
Found the LR part numbers for a D4 ( I think) LR051626 Front and LR055454 for the rear, but nothing corresponds to them on the online adverts.
LR fronts with fitting kits £135, Brembo £88 and Ferodo £50....

After doing mine for the first time using the bible, only tool I was missing was the wind back tool, to push the caliper pistons back into the caliper. I fashioned something using some wood and a g clamp I think. It was a bit of a pain. Purchased a proper tool before I did the rear pads, much easier.
Be careful when removing the sensor, it's a bit delicate and as the bible says, the copper connector can go flying. MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

If the warning light has come on you will need to change the sensor, costs under a tenner, just have to trace the wire back where it goes behind the lining of the wing/wheel arch to find the connector.

Official warning is brake pads worn, but having just checked them there is at least 3mm on the outside pads.
With regards to the sensors, should i buy LR or aftermarket? Last of the D4 HSE...

Have a look at EBC red stuff pads. I’ve found the brake dust to be less than the standard pads.

3mm is LR recommended minimum pad thickness. so warning should light at that point, Any less and significantly more heat gets transferred into the callipers when braking, as the friction material acts as an insulator .
