Yesterday I spent 6 hours….

...changing the damn oil on my V8… whoever had the bright idea of cranking the old oil filter to the torque of your average crank pulley bolt should be shot!

Turning by hand – failed
Turning with a strap wrench – failed and broke the wrench
Turning with a 3 prong wrench – failed and almost twisted the filter in half
Turning with the old trick of a screwdriver through the filer – failed and gouged even bigger holes in the filter and covered my arm in oil

My last resort (other than removing the oil cooler) was to use a hammer and a chisel on the edge to try and get some rotation… eventually after about an hour of furious hammering I managed to get it to move 1mm… it didn’t even crack loose… it took another hour or so of hammering it round mm by mm before it finally let go.

What a bitch of a job! The first lesion every mechanic should learn is never ever ever over-tighten anything... ever.

How can you overtighten an oil filter to that extent without distorting it?

Maybe it was assembled dry. I always smear oil on mating faces and rubber seals.

My pet hate when I was a mechanic on the trucks was people (idiots) fitting filters with a dry rubber seal.

Always run a smear of oil or grease on the seal for all filters..

I had a similar situation to yourself but on a 14 litre V8 Scania, for some reason, on that engine they decided the oil filter would be best placed between the engine and viscous fan, I ended up doing the same as you after twisting the filter until it sheared off!

The world is full of cowboys! Glad you got it off without any engine damage..

Either some apprentice decided to use a strap wrench to tighten it or Hercules himself did it up.
