2008 D3 manual - front to rear brake pipe replacement

Hello and happy new year to all.

I have tried searching for the correct information about this, but I have found contradictory results.

My 2008 manual D3 (210k miles) just failed its MOT and it needs the front to rear brake pipes replacing, as well as the brake pipe that runs between the rear wheels.

My very good indy (Aylmer Motor Works, Hertfordshire, UK) say this is a body off job and have quoted 20 hours labour. They say they have tried doing this job without taking the body off and also tried cutting and joining the steel brake pipes in situ, but these alternative methods have not been successful.

Is taking the body off the only way? If so, it’s really not worth it me paying around £2k for the job on this vehicle, which is a great shame as I’ve owned her since 2013 and done every job ever needed.[/img]

I have been told by my dealer that the rear brake pipes need replacing £750 apparently they remove the exhaust and cut and join but I’ll be doing it myself on the drive hope this helps

No, body doesn't need to come off. It's typically the front to rear pipes further back than the gearbox where the corrosion occurs, and the pipes can be joined in the middle leaving the front part in place.

Even JLR now (well, for about the last 10yrs) offer a shorter pipe run replacement so the body doesn't need to come off.
I'd still use copper/kunifer though.

Prefer to use Kunifer where possible, copper pipes not allowable in Europe (or some EU countries) I believe.

Another vote here for cutting and joining (and not using steel pipes!). If the body had to come off for some other reason then it would make sense to do the brake pipe at the same time, but if it is just for the brake pipes leave it on.
