When fitting the new crankshaft oilseal after replacing the oilpump in the 27 TDV6 engine, should the seal be 1mm proud (sticking out of the oilpump casing towards the front of the vehicle/radiator) or 1mm recessed?
make sure you do not tap it in to far’ it needs to be at least 1mm proud of the casing
but in posts in various threads on here I've seen the opposite claiming that it should be 1mm recessed (below the oilpump housing casing towards the engine), e.g.

The seal does not fit flush with the face of the casing, when you use the LR tool the seal does sit 1mm below the face of the casing, just make sure its in enough.
Wrong it sits 1mm lower than the face of the pump. Look at the tool it has a 1mm step so the seal goes in by 1mm. I have this tool and have fitted hundreds.

That document is the old version that I miss typed in it, it was changed years ago to be 1mm inset. Not sure how the old one is still being downloaded.
I have just made sure the updated one is in my gallery.

@Flack
I was partially quoting your guide, have I misinterpreted?
"You can now fit the new crankshaft oilseal making sure you don’t damage it, slide it on the shaft, I used a big socket over the seal to tap it in but make sure you do not tap it in to far’ it needs to be at least 1mm proud of the casing, If the seal is to far in it will leak after a short time."

The document located here in your gallery under OilPump Casing Replacement https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/displayim...amp;pos=19 is still the old one and states 1mm proud.
I can't find any updated version in your Gallery. Perhaps you could please link it?
I believe that this is also the document linked to in the Wiki - so that would also need updating.

Thanks for sharing the picture of that proper tool. A very expensive item for something that looks like it could be machined up on a lathe fairly easily.
Better still it could be 3D printed given that Defector has already shown us in https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/oil-pump-cr...al+Fitting that plastic items can be used to push the new seal into place. With Mazda MX-5s there a number of these where you can download the crank seal insert tool, cam shaft holding wedge, etc. and 3D print them out yourself. If someone could measure it up and draw it up...Mine - modified MY03 LT L318 Discovery 2a HSE Td5 15P

dont suppose you can post up the dimensions of the seal tool? - i'll give it a go and printing one
I have one printed in ABS that I made in CAD, but never tried it because I always forget about it when doing the oilpump change, I must try it on the next one I do..
Just dug the one I 3d printed out from my garage..

Flack - did you manage to check out the old version of your guide in your Gallery that I told you about above?

If you pop that file up I'd be happy to test it out for you.
