2.7TD Engine oil cooler replacement guide |
|
Just before I tackled replacing the oil cooler I had a search through youtube to see if I could get an idea of the job. Couldnt find anything so I thought I'd do my own video. I've just finished the first part and uploaded it, still working on the remainder which I'll post ASAP
Hopefully someone finds some benefit of these. Its my first time making videos so its a little rough around the edges, but we gotta start somewhere

This looks really helpful, thanks! How long did this job take you, start to finish?

Without the stuff around filming it I reckon around 8hrs would be about right. Took me a bit longer with filming and camera setup etc... and I didn't do it all in one hit either as I only had time available at night to do the job so it was spread out over 3 days

I have been getting trace coolant contamination in my engine oil. Two logical sources for that is head gasket and oil cooler. Oil cooler seems to be a more common failure point here ( and it's an easier change) so I done that first. And there was an external oil leak on the cooler so that was an added bonus of the change

Great videos Shane, I had the oil cooler changed December 2019 after a failure on our trip east, unfortunately I didn't have time to do it myself I had others do it, looking at your vids it would have been well within my capabilities but time was short for me.
Cheers

I just used this guide to help me do this job. I changed the gasket only. Aircon on on the ride home from the self garage and there is no smell of oil!
I did buy a second hand oil cooler just in case but after seeing the corroded old gasket and corrosion underneath cooler I decided there was nothing wrong with my cooler and my best option was to clean up the mating surfaces with a razor blade (carefully) then 800 the 1200 grit wet and dry. I was sure to handle the connectors and the leak off pipes with extreme care after seeing Shane's experience!
That oil separator. What were they thinking! I've had this off 3 times now in total and I still have absolutely no idea how it comes off or goes back on. I easily lost 4 hours with breaks trying to get this off/on the car. Even with Shane's video i struggled to replicate it. We go our lives learning to be the right side of not breaking things but you to disregard all of that instinct to win the battle with the oil cooler!
I wonder if the corrosion and subsequent oil leak was due to using tap water in the coolant? I topped up my coolant with tap water today. Should I actually be using de-ionised water?

I had my oil cooler replaced a while back as I had oil in the coolant reservoir.
Unfortunately I am still getting oil in there so it will need to go back in.
I did learn an expensive lesson though, took it to my normal local garage ( that I’ve used for years, but not for a disco) ended up paying well over double what I was quoted from a LR specialist. Lesson learnt.
Will be going back in to see what the problem is this time. Doubt it will be the oil cooler again as a nee one was fitted.
Wish I’d seen this guide at the time, at least it would have given an idea. 2005 Disco3 HSE Auto 😁

Its been a little while since I've been on the forum, but thought I'd share the follow up video after the oil change where I explain how I come to the conclusion to change out the oil cooler and if I was right:
Just had another oil change last week and results are still looking good
