Accelerated Cam Belt degredation using stop start

Hi I have recently taken delviery of my MY2015 SE Tec .... great, however I have concerns about the eco stop start system ....... having seen cam belt failures at 15k on short journey stop start commercial vans
will this constant stop starting effect the 100k std cam belt longevity???? Have the MY2015 belts been upgraded??? Also .... does the constant stop starting effect engine longevity generally. The commercial vans I am referring to stripped the teeth of the belt ..... apparantly when a diesel engine fires ... it deos so quiet violently transferring allot of torque suddenly to the valve train.... Crying or Very sad

Currently I have to switch off eco mode every time I use car....annoying....although I have noticed if you are very ginger with the brakes you can actually stop with the engine running in eco mode.....
Any thoughts.... Rolling Eyes

My thoughts are that it's designed for it - and not a first generation stop start any more, and it's under warranty!

Hmmm my experience is slightly different.........as long as the car makes it outside the 3 year water shed ........ they usually care not Evil or Very Mad ......... If the belt has been beefed up ... then I would have more comfindence ..... Razz

I agree with what you are saying - but I think if it failed at (say) 20k after 3.5 years, and was fully serviced and not sure a belt change, JLR have been quite good with other problems in terms of contributing to the fix.

I'd let the car run as designed and not try to fight it.

Ask your dealer to turn the stop start, off, they can switch the default to opposite to factory standard

When I bought mine, the sales rep told me that various bits (inc battery, starter motor) had been beefed up. I suspect the cam belt might be one of them.

Can someone confirm that this is correct - hopefully a simple alteration to CCF file?

I cannot comment on whether dealers can or will do this but there is a parameter in the CCF that enables or disables stop-start. For example, for the Australian market the CCF setting is disabled.

my uninformed gut feel is that stop start is not great for engines

starting is stressful for the mechanical (and maybe some electrical ) components and is certainly not worth it when weighed up against the very small benefit in fuel saving

I believe it was developed as a 'work around' to lower measured CO2 outputs and increase the 'urban' figure on the mpg tests

and on a practical note, I personally find it a pain in the ar5e and it makes me feel disconnected and lacking control of the vehicle, therefore its usually switched off (on the RRS, don't have it on the D4)

I look forward to hearing that you have edited the CCF file on your RRS Paul.

If stop/start couldn't be disabled in this manner it might well stop me from buying a D4 in due course.

I have no problem pressing the button but the bright warning light it leaves you with is a bit daft.

It could do with the button being on the wheel, rather than having to look down to press it.

Guys I was really against having a car with start/stop probably because everybody says stop/start is crap etc Rolling Eyes But, after driving it for a couple of weeks now it is really unobtrusive and to be honest I really don't notice when it stops now as the operation of stopping and starting is seamless and it really isn't such a big deal Thumbs Up
