Adjustable Towbar height help please
Hi everyone, I've recently had fitted the three position Towbar and ideally to tow our twin axle caravan in a level position the ball needs to be at Around the 450 mm height. The bar comes with the large cover plate which I realise I can take off to achieve the height that I need but I like the look of this larger plate and would like to leave it on.
My question is there any reason why I can't fix to the centre position on this plate as the instructions only refer to using the top or bottom fixings.

Realised that my post might sound daft and apologies if it's been covered elsewhere on the site, I just wondered if I was missing something before I moved it to the centre position.

Take the plate off - you dont need it, and then use whichever set of holes works for you. Here's mine, this height has been perfect for both our Abbey Spectrum and Bailey Olympus (both twin axles)

Rob - those were on my old D3, and dont fit the D4.
I have some different ones (slightly larger bore) on my D4 (there's a pic in my gallery with them on the D4), and these I got from a place called Custom Chrome in Nuneaton.

I really want to keep the large plate on as it looks more substantial when fitted, don't like the look of the bar without it, I moved the bar to the centre position today and it looks pretty good, I just wonder why Landrover only mention the top and bottom positions.

you dont need the drop plate, it doesnt make anything "more substantial", just gives you a lower set of bolt holes

Thanks for the replies, but I'm only asking if I can use the middle position with the drop plate, as my original post says I want to keep this plate on, sorry if I've created a daft post, I just wanted to see if I was missing something.

I just changed the height of mine at the weekend. If you look at the plate, 4 of the 6 holes are countersunk to receive the allen bolt heads. I wouldn't advise putting the tow bar mounting bolts in these holes. I don't have the instructions in front of me but I think you can use the plate for 3 of the 4 heights, even though the instructions only show it used for two. It cant be used for the 400mm height due to the position of the countersunk holes and side bar bolts.

I have mine at about 450mm to the top of the ball
with the plate still on. I turned it upside down.

Sorry to hi-jack this post but you guys seem in the know.
I've just bought a 2nd hand Witter tow bar, I've not tried fitting it as one of the supporting bars is slightly warped. Will this effect the integrity of the tow bar, tried Witter but no response?

I like the way You've done yours Erea as it gives more clearance still using the large plate which I do feel has a better appearance but does Swansty have a valid point regarding not fixing through the countersunk holes?

I had to turn the plate round on mine to get the ball low enough, our Abbey Vogue sits nice and level at this height
