SWMBO went and put £50 worth of unleaded in her almost empty TDV6 D3 this morning and drove a few miles until it sputtered and stopped
AA have got it to a local garage who are now busy draining the fuel, but what damage is she likely to have done to the car?
I guess we better get the fuel filter changed ASAP (that's if it will start) and I appreciate the HP fuel pump may need to be replaced, but could she have caused damage to the engine etc (i.e. costly repair bill)?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have done a search and those of you who've made the mistake seem to have had the presence of mind not to drive off, unlike my dearly beloved.
Thanks in advanceOne Wife.......Livid

It's going to cost over £4000 I'm afraid. You may be lucky as a few insurance policies cover misfueling; but that is just a nice way of saying quite a few don't.
Land Rover will look to replace the HP pump, HP pipes, injectors (x6), both fuel rails and fuel filter, plus removing the tank to fully drain it and adding a full tank of Diesel.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
The minimum you should be looking to do is replace everything on the HP side of the fuel system, and hope no damage to the engine afterwardsTLO has left the building.......

Got AA draining all fuel etc. Should we leave the vehicle at the garage and get it collected Monday to get sorted or if they manage to start it would it be ok to drive 10 miles or so home? One Wife.......Livid

No, don't try to start it or turn the ignition on - get it recovered to a LR specialist/dealer.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

If your gonna move it get it transported, don't start or gawd forbid try to drive it as that could only compound the problems further
Some people have had good results from claiming this on insurance. I'm not saying they should pay but if they do then bonusTLO has left the building.......

TLO is right.
My sister in law put petrol in her nearly new BMW.
Her insurance paid out over £5K for the repair.
Best of luckAll things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.

I may be talking BS, be in a dream state or what, but when I did the same, admittedly I didn't drive off or prime the engine. But having stood next to the specialist who came out and spent 1.5hrs draining by D3 and getting it going again, I chatted to him for ages about various scenarios and he told me lots of stories.
He claimed it wouldn't have done too much if I'd driven off and told me about lots of people who had and not done too much, he even said a bit of P in the D engine cleaned it to some extent.
But, I won't argue and contradict everyone else's opinion!Nov 04 D3 TDV6 HSE Java Black

If it stopped it is likely to have taken out injectors and the hp fuel pump. Dont be tempted to do the bear minimum otherwise it may bite you on the .
A bit of P in the D engine 30 years ago was considered ok but in these highly strung tight tolerance diesel engines it strips the lubricant in secondsTLO has left the building.......
