They seem to be a lot better than warrantywise, they just left me to get on with it not a hint of "lets take it somewhere" until I started complaining afterwards.
Just be careful though (although this does appear to be clearcut) in case it is something not covered by your policy and they give you the bill. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

hi all
I see Disco_mikey hase done a few engine swaps, were they all for busted cranks/big ends
there appears to be a growing number of owners suffering this fate. Have these owners tuned their engines or do they do a lot of towing. should we all be worried
I feel very sorry for everyone who has had these problems, i thought these sort of problems were overcome by manufacturers during the '80s (my TR7 comes to mind).
all the best

2 were for broken cranks, and AFAIK they were both standard, and as Dave says, his was a misfire My D3 Build Thread

As far as im aware the vehicle was used to protect the former TB PM for most of its life, i purchased it at 49k then the engine blew at 62.5k, never toed as far as im aware the closest it got to a toad was TB's wife
Fugly!

Hi all
I guess i did'nt really think towing/tuning caused these problems, just hoped it wasn,t only very bad luck.
If it happened to me, i couldn,t afford to repair the car, i,d probably have to sell it "as is" and take the hit.
How does a missfire damage the engine, does it damage a piston. come back my old mini, just re-set points/timing/clean + gap plugs.
Does any one know how many vehicles have been affected, is it a high milage problem
thanks and all the best
Andi.

Apparently it can melt the top of the piston as it is profilled to ensure a good swirl and good combustion, but mine showed no sign of that, just a lack of compression in one cylinder at 82k and no cause could be found. I went so far down the line that I couldn't afford to stop. You get to a point where you have to make decisions about where to throw your money, my first was to remove it from the main dealer, working it through then the cost would have topped £15k - for a minor misfire if I had left it there
By taking it out of the dealer I got a bargain, £9207 of which I have recovered around £2k so far, but above all it is the stress that really gets to you rather than the numbers. The fact that people that you have trusted and paid thousands of pounds to over the years for servicing and parts will just turn round and lie to you and just rip you off whilst making it sound like it is all your fault. All from a supposedly prestige dealership!
Rule number one - don't trust a word they tell you, get it in writing and ask for the fault codes and the numbers from any tests that they tell you they have carried out, if they submit a warranty claim then read exactly what they submit and if in doubt then get a second opinion, even just on here!
There are of course exceptions TLO, I just wish all your colleagues from dealerships all over the country could be trusted to offer their best honest advice. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

It's all part of how it runs. Mine was very slight, only at tickover, still had good pull and good fuel consumption. The emissions were high at MOT time which was what prompted me to get it looked at, wish I'd never bothered now Joined the BMWX5 45e group
