Curse of the return of the Tiny critters! |
|
The damn things are back with a vengeance. Mice chewed my fuel tank in 2008 when car was only months old now I've had three of our cars broken into the habitation space probably on Friday night. Hyundai I10 they ate a shopping bag in the boot, VW Passat minced a bed sheet in the boot, Disco3 chewed into a halfrauds carry all thing in the boot area. Set traps in all three on Saturday and got two field mice in the VW, one in boot and t'other under drivers seat. Nothing in Disco and nowt in I10.
So how are the little sods getting in. I know they can get through a hole the size of a pencil, but has anyone intimate knowledge of the underside of the Disco. Anyone permanently fitted a 12volt sonic device in a vehicle with any success. I've had them under the bonnet munching anything they can get their little gnashers into and normally have a sonic device just sitting in the engine bay, but it wasn't there on Friday.

Neat Jeyes fluid around the wheels seems to work well on the caravan.

Pop your rearmost seats up and take a look at the rubber bung covering the spare wheel winch. That would be my guess for how they got into the boot of the D3 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I am making a claim for the the Guiness Book of Records for the largest number of mice cought in a tractor cab - 21, yep twenty one they have been living on battery casing plastic and have eaten/chewed a hole the size of a golf ball in the top of the battery
Disco under bonnet 2.
Garage shelf 9.
Under caravan unknown used poison, £28 worth so far and the little blighters are still eating it. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Try some glue boards.
Used these in our grain store and could catch 20 a night.
You must check them 2 or 3 times a day though.
Not for the squeamish however.

Got two on prowl 24/7 but thought it was against their rights to be used for filling holes up
Another in the VW boot last night approx 07.30 - set the alarm off.
Thanks for tips , but already checked the spare wheel bung. One neighbour (horse keeper) has had them invest a food store so that's probably the source. VW under bonnet area shows signs of chewing. Just wondered if when dealer fitted electrics for towing on the Disco they didn't put bungs back correctly. Living in the country we've experienced this before but not three cars in one sitting so to speak.

Had a fuel leak on the disco reported on another thread, just dropped the tank and found the little b-----s have chewed into the rubber pipe that does a 90 degrees out of the pump unit and supplies the fuel burning heater. Not only have they eaten through that pipe they've also eaten through the same small diameter pipe a bit further along. Thought it would be a simple fix with some new pipe from stock but the 90 degree pipe they've chewed has two very different diameters at either end. Looks like stealers in the morning hoping it's still available and not on back order cause of change of tank design!!!!
Looking to mouse proof the area by glueing around the whole area the stainless steel scouring pads so the little sods will cut themselves to ribbons.
Anyone know why they are attracted to the fuel system pipes, I've had them in other vehicles but not to the extent that they attack the disco.
Suppose I should be thankful that they've left the actual tank alone!!!!!!!!

Put mice fuel tank in search box and you will find your not alone, not that helps much, been well documented over the years.
Mice seem to go nuts for the pipe insulation.
2 options it would appear
SI 1 wrote:I had my tank eaten apparently by a rat / mouse 4 weeks ago Landrover took out the tank and said that the damage consisted of two small holes and elbow joint. Two options were given ;
1) replace tank with new at a cost of £400
2) Poly resin the two holes and replace the elbow joint. £150
Option no 2 please
I have had no problems since
