D4's can't cope with the cold!

Just had my 2010 discovery 4 stranded in austria because it wouldn't start. The problem was traced back to the intercooler pipes filling up with water then freezing up. Turns out land rover are aware of this as there is a tech built in about it! Thank you land rover. I can drive it up mountains and through rivers but if it's cold and humid, leave it at home. Thought they might have told people, especially dealers, who knew nothing about it!

Ours is a 2011 XS and not had any problems with it in the cold AND we have overwintered in Bavaria on a couple of occasions - temperature down to minus 12 Celsius. Thumbs Up
 LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

Fair few reports a few years ago re this problem in a very cold time in the Alps. Whilst the peeps there thought it was dodgy diesel it was mostly put down to dead glowplugs, however there was a fair of discussion re Frozen intercooler pipes stranding D3/4s and RRSs. Thumbs Up

Is when driving long distances in high humidity, very cold conditions.
See LTB00364
Would definitely drop off bottom intercooler pipes and have a look.

This is an issue that affects any vehicle with an intercooler and is well reported across many marques ....very cold and humid conditions will freeze ... it's natural.

Vehicles that remain in areas of the world where similar conditions persist have to have plastic inserts fitted to reduce the normal performance of the intercooler system Thumbs Up

I think the issue is unacceptable as it has been widely known for years on many vehicle types. The planet's atmosphere has not changed that much…

Robbie's solution would look like a simple variable restrictor for the charged air system that could control the temperature. This could be a automatically / electrically operated in markets where this was common or even just a simple leaver that could be switched-over for cold weather partially restricting the cooling air. Adding and removing bits of plastic is really really dumb.

The TSB looked like this:

CONDITION SUMMARY:

Situation: A customer may report a concern that the engine fails to start and or lacks power in low ambient temperatures with relatively high humidity that may be accompanied with a 'restricted performance' message displayed in the instrument pack message center. Appendix 2 - Range Rover - 4.4 TDV8 Appendix 3 - Range Rover Sport - 3.0 TDV6

PARTS:

NOTE: Fitment of the intercooler blanking pieces is required to reduce cooling system performance in cold ambient air temperatures. With blanking pieces fitted full vehicle capability is maintained up to 15 degrees C ambient air temperature. Above this temperature normal vehicle usage (excluding arduous towing and off road driving) is possible up to 25 degrees C although some degradation of the air conditioning system performance may be experienced. If the vehicle is used outside of these parameters with the blanking pieces left in place, the driver will be warned via the coolant temperature gauge that the engine temperature is above normal and will enter a 'self protection mode' which will restrict vehicle performance until normal system temperatures are resumed. It is therefore recommended that the blanking pieces should be removed where ambient air temperature is regularly in excess of 15 degrees C or where the vehicle requires higher cooling system performance (such as for arduous towing or arduous off road driving). Advise the customer as necessary with reference to the information above and update the vehicle repair history as appropriate.

Action: Should a customer express concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.

Cause: Upon removal of the lower intercooler hoses fitted between the secondary or primary turbo charger and intercooler there is evidence of compacted ice and or excessive water in the lower portion of the intercooler. In addition there may be engine related fault codes stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that require diagnosis and fault code clear, however if there are no signs of ice or water in the intercooler it is likely that the DTC(s) have been generated by an alternative on board diagnostic routine that is not as a result of restricted airflow due to ice formation.

Suggested Customer Concern Code D42.

Clearly dealers should know about it as the details are on TOPIx. What is missing is an entry in the owner's manual so that they can prepare for a cold weather journey rather than breaking-down and then having the TSB applied.

Although just how they expect the average owner to apply, remove, apply, remove etc the blanking when driving through warmer climates to colder altitudes and back again is beyond me.
